I'm not sure if i should get static or a dynamic ip.

What are the pros and cons of a dynamic or static ip?

I'll probably get bellsouth dsl soon cause I've been told its better then cable here in Miami. Anyways, I spoke to a bellsouth representative and she wants to charge me an extra 15 dollers a month for a static ip. I was wondering if its worth it. I will network a couple of computers in my house and i'm planing on sharing internet acess. Can you guys help me out here please? Thanks

Well what i do know is that dynamic ips constantly change and static ips dont. I was just wondering if having a dynamic ip will complicate things when networking computers. Yes i freaking networking newbie but i'm trying to learn.

That won't make a difference to you unless you want to be an 3l33t Juar3z d00d0r and host a server. DHCP is your friend, and will automagically grant you a Brand New IP Address when need be. But generally, if you have your router set to "PPPoE always dialed in" then you'll have a static IP.

I have dynamic IP right now, but, it's actually tied to my MAC addr and hasn't changed for months... except when I change the MAC (with my NIC associated with the modem). So dynamic IP changing is based on ISP policies, the busier the ISP the more often it will change.

And, you can still run services using a DynamicIP, but, you need to know what the current IP is to use them, or register with a dynamicDNS Service.

But if you want to be 'professional' about those services you'd likely want a static IP and a bunch of other nice things to go along with it.
