Recently I upgraded my service with Verizon Fios. I switched to a new package with Digital Voice and faster internet. The price was a bit higher but because I was switching to Digital Voice the taxes would be lower coming out about even in the end.

Now I got my bill and its ~50 dollars more then usual and I have a charge on it Prorating the service for the time between when I upgraded and when the billing period ended. But I already paid the whole bill from the month prior including those weeks. So there was also a refund on the new bill for those weeks but it clearly wasn't enough. If the total price price of the upgraded package was the same shouldn't the prorating - the refund equal 0 dollars?

I called Customer Service and tried to explain but he just kept telling me it was because of the prorating. He eventually offered to just give me a credit anyway which I took. Am I wrong here?

Are you stalking me?

I just moved and got Fios for the first time. I got a big ass bill on the first month and I was infuriated.

I called them and it was indeed due to prorating (after 40 mins of itemizing bills).

Prorating means that you changed packages during a bill cycle and it refunds what you had paid for the rest of that cycle then charges you for the rest of the cycle based on the new package. If the new package is more expensive than the previous one, you will get a charge on the next bill. If it was less, you get a credit.

Since your new package is higher, that means you basically owed extra money from last month which is added onto this bill.

Well if you just got Fios for the first time then it makes sense that your bill would be high. You'd likely be paying for a few extra weeks between the time you signed up and the time the next billing period ended.

Edit: And no I'm not stalking you.

Edit 2:Or am I?

i actually had the same issue with verizon when i just upgraded to 2 new smart phones. i upgraded 1 phone 3 days after my old billing cycle starts, then the other phone another week later. so basically i should have my old bill for a few days, then the new bill for the rest of the billing cycle.

well yesterday i looked on verizon online and my bill was about $75 more than it should be before taxes on my new plan. however since the bill was just posted, the actual viewing of the bill wasnt available yet.

i have no clue how the hell prorating bills can make it significantly larger than my current bill is going to be. once the actual bill is viewable on there i'm going to call in and ask em wtf is up.

You have to take into account the price difference of the new bill vs old bill PLUS the price difference of the previous month. The first bill is always a monster.

ooooh...I'm good at this one!

on the day the change was made, you billing stopped and then started again. Lets say your billing cycle is 1-30 and you made the change on the 15th. Your billing would stop on the 15th, you would be refunded back the 15 days you paid in advance and then charged a whole month at the new rate. The time when proration really hits hard is when you make the change at the beginning of your billing cycle. Then you get basically a double bill since there isn't anything to refund you back for the services you have paid in advance. Or sometimes one service will have been installed but not another, therefor you get proration in 2 different months.

Less than $50? Pay it and move on.

There is also package change fees, etc. Read your bill, it will be entirely spelled out. I used to get calls all the time about stuff like this and I assure you the bill is never wrong.

Look at it like this.
Month- I paid
December- $150
January- $150
February- $200
March- $155

I don't see how that makes sense.
