I'm using Netscape 4.75 on 2 different computers and I'm not able to log in to the
new subscriber log in link. If I use IE 5.0 it works great.....does anyone have any ideas?

When I click on the subscriber link (looking at the url window) it changes from

http://subscriber.anandtech.com/sublogin.cfm
to
http://www.anandtech.com/js/anand.js

in a flash.......the second url then leaves you with a blank page 404 apache server error.....

It's something to do with Netscape but heck if I know!

Any ideas??????

I'm getting the same with a recently installed Netscape Navigator 4.78 as well. However, I use IE5.5 when I surf most of the time and don't have any problems. It does sound like a problem on anandtech's side though.

I ran into the same problem with Netscape 4.78. I also prefer NS. I think it displays most pages much nicer than IE 5.5.

The problem is that FuseTalk uses features only found in IE 5+ and Netscape 6+. Until recently, I have avoided Netscape 6, but yesterday, I installed NS 6.2, and so far, it's really nice. The default "skin" shows too much AOL influence, but they have a "classic" skin that feels quite comfortable.

Here are some tips I found helpful for a good installation:

1. Take the time to download the install files (about 26 MB). That way, you can re-install it without having to d/l them, again. They automatically go into a separate SETUP directory. I burned mine to a CD to clear the disk space, and I have already installed it three times to experiment with different setups.

2. I installed mine in a separate directory, rather than putting it in my old Netscape directory. That lets you keep all your old browser working, as well as the new one, so you can compare one against the other. Netscape 6.2 imported all my old bookmarks, etc. The only thing that did not copy over was my old Netscape mail. That isn't a problem, because the old NS 4.78 mail program still works just fine.

When I am totally happy with my setup, I will import my NS 4.78 mail info into NS 6.2. Meanwhile, I can use the new one to access the subscriber link.

Hope that helps. :)

I'm having the same problem. At work, I use Netscape 4.5, and have no other choice. I get the same 404 Apache error.

I would like to see this remedied in the near future! :D

Harvey was right on the money. I downloaded Netscape 6.2 and
installed it by itself and it works like a charm but there is
something about the 4.75 and earlier versions that changes
the login URL to something else....I've seen quite a few
webpages here and there that don't seem to "like" Netscape.
I cut my teeth on Netscape and I've been a die hard fan. I
don't really like IE because you have to use Outlook or something
else for mail and I like having my 4.75 Netscape on and if I get
mail it gives me a "ding" and I don't have to have both a browser
and an email program open just to know when I get mail!

I found out how to make it work.

Just turn off JavaScript (Edit-->Preferences-->Advanced) until you have logged in. Then, turn it back on once you are in, and all of the fancy options come back.

ta-da! :D

You are the man! I wrote Anand last night and told him
about the trouble I was having....I guess most subscribers
must be using IE and this problem hasn't come to the surface
til now....
