I'm not even sure what's wrong.

I was running McAfee as my anti-virus software. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501, Windows XP. I generally use Firefox, but occasionally use IE and today downloaded Google Chrome.

It seemed like all of a sudden I started having problems. I ran a scan and it detected some trojans, I believe, and I thought got rid of them. Now all hell has broken loose.

Nothing will update. I uninstalled McAfee and reinstalled it hoping that would help, but it says I'm not connected to the internet. (I'm on DSL.) I tried downloading Microsoft Security Essentials, but I can't use it. It won't even run once without an update and I can't update because it says I'm not online. I've been trying to find free online scans, but sometimes the search engine will hijack my search and send me to another site.

I've got a friend that's coming to visit (it's actually MmmSkyscraper) and he's going to help me, but that's not until the first part of next month.

Any suggestions for me? I'm really not sure what else to do. 🙁 Right now I'm running with no anti-virus at all because nothing will work. GAH!

Oh, one more thing... There seems to be a program (I guess it's a program...lol) called kxc.exe that keeps doing things. I'm not sure how to get rid of it. I re-downloaded Adaware and even though it won't actually open fully, it's blocking the program from going places.

Try doing a system restore back to a good day.

If that doesn't work then boot up in safe mode with networking and download malwarebytes and install and run it. Let it cleanup anything it finds.

I just thought of the system restore about 30 seconds before I checked to see if there were any replies. lol I know how to start in safe mode, but the rest of what you said is pretty much Greek to me. 😱 Some geek I am. 😉 lol

time to wipe that baby's HDD.

If you don't want to go that far, i suggest you use another PC, grab an USB and download malwarebytes and AVAST/AVIRA into the USB, go into the infected computer, run>msconfig>select diag start up, reboot, install both and run em until that thing is clean while keeping the computer OFFLINE!!! It's key that you keep it offline until you are sure it is 100% clean!! After the anti virus is DONE(that means you ran a full system scan at least twice), download CCleaner, wipe all the trash, UNINSTALL EVERY PROGRAM THAT YOU DO NOT RECOGNIZE!!

After that!

Reboot in Diag Mode, go run>msconfig>services> enable ALL, check hide all MS services, disable all! now go to start up! disable anything that isn't your anti virus! Boot back up and see what happens! if that doesn't work, its bye bye time! Make sure you don't plug in the USB anywhere until its fully formated!

Best of luck!

Sorry, I thought you would be geeky enough. 😀 When you get to the menu to select "safe mode", select "safe mode with networking" instead. Once you have booted into this version of safe mode start internet explorer and go to www.malwarebytes.org and click the blue button to download the free version of Malwarebytes. Install it. During the install it will prepopulate the options to update it's database and start it to run a scan. Disconnect from the network before you start the scan. Try running a quick scan first. It's faster and will cleanup the worst of the virus. Run a full scan after you reboot form the cleanup of the quick scan. Install Microsoft Security Essentials and let it run a full scan.

There is a chance that the virus will prevent you from doing some of this to cleanup. Post back if you have problems.

Well..... lol

It only let me go as far back as the 11th. Grrr I did that and was able to at least get Adaware going and after about a 4 1/2 hour scan, here I am. I'm still unable to get anything to update. I'll try tomorrow to see what else I can do. After doing this all day, I'm over it. lol At the very least, help will be here in a couple of weeks in the form of MmmSkyscraper. Ironically my mom is having computer problems right now, too, and can't even get online. Once she does, I'll see if she can download what you said onto a flash drive and plug it in over here.

Thanks for the help, guys! I'll keep at it tomorrow. I'm too tired to tinker. 🙂

I tried download Malwarebytes, but my system won't let me connect to any page that has it on there. Yay. 🙁 My mom's having problems with her system, so I can't get online over there to D/L it and install it here. Is there a way for like a friend to D/L it and e-mail it to me as an attachment?

I did the Noob Killer, but I'm still having mucho problemos. Just trying to post here, it would try to redirect me to a totally new site while I was in the middle of reading this. GRRRRR!

Thanks for the help, though, guys.

It's possible, if not, you can always run over to an internet cafe or local library.

Haha I forgot to try it. I swear my brain is scrambled. I've spent so many hours on here trying to fix it. Each scan is taking like 4 1/2 hours. Press F8 on startup, right?

And the networking part? I've never felt so UN-geeky. Am I just going into safe mode, getting online through there and looking for malwarebytes or is there something else I'm supposed to do?

Sounds like you have one of those really bad trojan viruses that pretty much take over your system and keep you from accessing any security websites. I think Malwarebytes is still your best chance but you may have to do some renames to get around the virus. If you get Malwarebytes installer copied to your PC but it will not start the install you will need to rename the install program from mbam-setup-1.46.exe to something else like abc456.exe to install it. If the main Malwarebytes program mbam.exe will not start after the install you will need to rename it something else like abc456.exe. The main program is located in "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\". Unfortunately there is no easy way to clean this type of mess up.

When you hit F8, a list should come up that says

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Safe Mode with Networking

You want to pick Safe Mode with networking.

Should look similar for XP/Vista/7

Where the hell would I have picked it up? I don't really go to many places. Facebook, here, e-mail (I don't open up anything from anyone I don't know.), youtube and maybe a couple more. It's weird.

Raven, I shall give it a go. 🙂

When you boot up and press F8 or CTRL you will see the following options. Select "Safe Mode with Networking". When the boot is complete you will look like you are in regular safe mode. Just start your browser and go to the Malwarebytes website and download the install program and run the install.

Windows Advanced Options Menu
Please select an option:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode

Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.

Alright, let me know, just follow the instructions i left a few post above and it should clear the trojan efficiently...unless its one of the over the top pesky bastard kinda trojans.

Go into the infected computer, run>msconfig>select diag start up, reboot, install both(malawarebytes and avira/avast) and run em until that thing is clean while keeping the computer OFFLINE!!!

P.s. You can select diag boot mode from safe mode w/networking.

It's almost impossible to know where it came from. Do any kids/teenagers access your PC? I find they are one the biggest causes of this type of infection. They download music and videos and allow disguised .EXE programs to run. We had one here at AT earlier this year or last year that hit our PCs through an infected third party ad. The bad guys keep getting worse.

No. My mom will sometimes use my laptop while she's at my house, but she doesn't go anywhere bad or open up anything on here.
