Here's my project for the week...

I've got an empty nook in my laundry area that we planned to trim out at some point with a storage locker setup.

I was able to track down a 39"x18"x24 wall cabinet that matched the closeout cabinets in the rest of our laundry area. I also nabbed a 24x30 wall cabinet. They also had some scrap panels and plywood sides of other cabinets that were scrap that I gave them $10 for.

I ended up making a storage cabinet and bench on the bottom:

Top part is the wall cabinet and some shelves that I trimmed out with the scrap parts. The hanger ledger is a piece of solid maple that routed an ogee edge on and stained and poly'd.

I've got about $350 in cabinets, counter top, hardware, ect.

It's not professional grade...but I'm cheap labor.

:)

Looks nice! Where did you get the cabinets? Although the bottoms look a tad low. Might just be me though

Rumor has it you are cheap labor. Will you do my trim work?

Edit: Probably just the lack of a reference. After checking the height of my chair with the door latch it seems my impressions were off

Yeh the "base" cabinet is actually a wall cabinet that is meant to go above a fridge/freezer. But it's really the perfect height to use as a bench and sit and put your shoes on. Plus it's short enough my 3 year old can climb up on it and hang up her coat.

Standard dining chair height is 18"-20". I'm actually right there by the time you account for an inch or two for the counter top. It just looks weird because you are used to a toe kick for base cabinets.

I work for beer but there's a diminishing return between payment and productivity.

:D

I'm willing to accept that risk. I have beer in the fridge. Can you arrive at 10am today? :awe:

"Honey, why is the trim crooked?"
"Because you aren't drinking enough!"

Heh. I've fallen victim to the "it looked good from my angle" more times than I'd like to count. You're crunched up tight to the wall trying to hold the trim with one hand, have a nailer in the other, a level tucked under your arm, a nailset and some trim nails pursed between your lips and there's usually a bead of sweat hanging off the tip of your nose annoying the crap out of you on top of all that.

Then step back and go "ah crap".

FWIW...I had about half a dozen women asking if I'm available for hire this weekend after seeing my handywork.

:D

Good luck. My best bud owns a trim carpentry business and has been doing it for 20 years. He can do masterful work but tells me - "Staircases and cabinets are the most pain in the ass ever invented"

My trim guy for my house took 6 weeks to trim out. The staircase alone was 3 of them. They are brutal. We had cast iron spindles and he had to take every shoe that went on the bottom of them and hand grind them down to the proper angle. I guess the stairs are built at 33 degrees and the shoes ship at 39 degrees. So he has to grind them down to match the pitch.

What a pain in the ass. Times 80+ shoes.
