I'm not a handyman, that's why it ended up like this.

I call it "Ghettobench."

The point, obviously by the pictures below, was a folding, storable workbench in my garage with the work surface consisting of a reclaimed tabletop from a dilapidated old target brand black lacquer mission style desk - a really damn good surface.

Pictures are worth a thousand words. So here's 3,000 words I don't have to type.

Legs look a bit thin. Not sure they would hold much weight. Probably would have been better off with some square metal tube.

Cross brace would be nice and if you have one those legs should be able to hold a lot I think. Overall a good looking bench. I've thought of building one like this.

They're just 2x2's. I was going for cheap. It's not like I plan on working on an engine block up there... and if I do, well I deserve it dropping on my nuts.

For my next trick, it will involve some furring strips and some pegboard, and a mounted wall outlet strip sitting slightly above the bench.

Cross bracing the legs is unnecessary as all the lateral movement will be stopped by the substantial hinges screwed to the 2x6 on the wall.

Great idea, and a good looking bench.

I would still put braces on the legs back to the wall to stop the front legs being kicked in accidentally and collapsing the table...but that's just me!

Wait, stop right there.

You mean... I've been doing it wrong this whole time?

:hmm:

Oh and for not being a handy man, I like it. If I tried this, it might or might not have ended up looking worse. 😀

Though I am quite satisfied with my similarly ghetto slide-out keyboard tray I built into my desk.

Not bad for not being a handyman, but what's the advantage of it? Are you going to keep things away from that space except when you want to use the table?

If that were my garage, things would pile up in front of the table and constantly get in the way when of bringing the table down each time. In that case, it may just as well be a regular table with room for storing stuff underneath.

It's a work space. My house is almost two years old and pretty no frills. I needed somewhere to work on things like painting mouldings and whatnot, sanding rail caps, things like that. For example, I had to replace a battery in an iPod I recently got. My wife was not thrilled with me using the kitchen counter as a soldering station. I wasn't terribly thrilled with the notion either.

The goal is to organize the garage a bit, provide a bit of utility, AND have some space for the car.

Shouldn't be an issue as long as he doesn't allow the pile to get higher than the table top, and keeps the table stored like in the third pic.

nice work! been thinking about something like that in my office

Now paint the damn walls...

(yes I know it's just a workshop 😛)

seriously though, atleast prime it! bare joint compound is a mold/mildew risk, and if it gets wet it will fall apart

Originally the plan was to keep it folded UP like in that pic, and use a padlock latch to keep it that way - until I determined the table is too wide and would interfere with the shelving I'm planning on putting up (ceiling hanging rack shelves to house the roughly 24" storage bins we have) above that area. The decision was made then to have the table fold downward instead.

It's nice to see a SunnyD thread. I thought you had died recently.

I haven't been posting terribly much, especially over here in OT. Too many asshats spouting too much crap lately and not enough quality content anymore. I think quite possibly most of the quality posters have likely been banned or something. But thanks though. It's nice to feel loved (which is why I started my life as a Catholic!).
