I'm making a website for expiring domain names.

It'll track the daily expiring domain names, and let users set "keywords" and specific searches (length of domain names, etc.).

If a domain name is going to expire that matches your searches, it will let you know via text or email.

Should I charge for this, or make it completely free and hope I make money off of advertising? I assume it will be somewhat useful.

you mean like pool.com, snapnames.com etc.?

Yes, but more feature filled.

It's an uphill battle, but best of luck.

Even if I make it free?

And snapnames.com and pool.com don't offer features like "length of domain", how long its been registered, etc. etc. etc.

Oh, and my name is nice .... expirealert.com :)

they have the marketshare. Pool.com has more tools to monitor these things then you can possible imagine which ensures a high level of efficiency.

Like I said, it's an uphill battle.

The "buyer" of the domain when it expires has the ability to auction it off to the highest bidder. And of course, pool.com has their share of the winning.

So you're saying that even if I make the service free, it may not be used that much? I'm getting my lists from a very reliable source, so the service would be accurate.

Won't know without trying - go ahead and see what happens, a failed attempt is better than not trying at all. If you need any help or resources, IM me, I'll help you out.

1) I would definitely offer it for free initially.
2) Consider making it "beta" since it's all the rage these days.
3) Content is king.
4) ... profit?

Its is better to market Beta because you will continue to work with it.

Do they charge for it?

If I may say so, if your trying to start a business and have no idea of who the competiton is are what they are charging (and your idea of research is to ask ATOT members), you might want to learn a bit more about business before moving forward...

Rossman's right. I'm even naming my second born Beta. Just wish I'd named the first one Alpha. Ofcourse then they'd always know who the favorite kid was......
