Actually, no. And that's what's so damned confusing. I don't have *TIME* to play all the newest, bleeding-edge games. I only play a scant few of them these days, and give up on most of them as soon as I realize that the story sucks a nut.

And as for why I don't want to go to an AGP version of the PCI-E cards, I'd still have to upgrade the PSU, and I *HATE* pidgeonholing myself into dead-end hardware. My AGP boards are worthless on the open market, and spending $300 on something equally worthless isn't something I can mentally justify.

I get ya but the next upgrade will require you to change almost everything anyway so there really isn't a need for immediate rush is there? Not that I'm saying you shouldn't upgrade if you can.

Can I upgrade? Yes. Should I? Yes. Do I need the upgrade and will there be a good return in investment? Not sure.

Here's a suggestion if it's possible...

Make that 9600 Mac compatible by flashing it's firmware (if possible) and then sell it to the Mac market. I'm sure you can get $150 for it if you do it right. Then replace it with something more powerful for the same amount.

I running pretty much the same rig as you do (I have a OCed 1700+ and 9800 Pro). Although I itch for an upgrade every now and then especially with all those new video cards around, the rational part of me says no as I play Diablo 2, Warcraft 3, CS 1.6 on a daily basis and my rig is more than enough to handle these old games. Plus most of the new games suck in terms of gameplay and isn't worth upgrading for.

Yes, but do SFFs also have to worry about 300ws of HDD spinup load? My PSUs do.

Just get a new video card. Is it really necessary to turn every bell and whistle on in a game? I have a Radeon 9800pro with 128mb and it does everything I need. I sure as hell won't spend $700 to upgrade my computer when everything is running fine.

Why do you want a CPU that's not much better than your current one?
Just get a 6800/X800 class Vcard (and a new PSU) and say goodbye to your performance issues.
