I'm lost...

Current home rig:

Socket 754 - VIA K8T800 - Asus K8V-SE Deluxe
A64-2800 S754.
R9600XT 256mb
350w Enermax from forever ago
1gb RAM

All other specs are inconsequential because they consist solely of a boatload of HDD space.

I'm LOOKING AT:
Socket 939 - nForce 4 SLI - Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
A64-3200 Venice S939
RX800XL-256mb
Antec TruePowerII 550w
Same 1gb RAM
$719. That's... A rediculous amount of money considering my scant income.

Realistically speaking, I *CANNOT* afford it, but I get this overwhelming feeling of inferiority. You see, this video card is UTTER FVCKING TRASH. I hate it. But there's nowhere I can go without PCI-E. If I go to PCI-E, I'm required to go to S939. I need a new PSU to power the 24pin mobo. I need the high end mobo for all the drive ports to sit my massive storage array on.

Also, I can't go to any REALLY high end video cards - because my monitor is a CRT and the lack of VGA connectors these days is startling. Add an LCD and I won't be able to afford it this semester, even if I stop eating.

And for comparison, my laptop is...
A64-3000 S754 Desktop CPU
GF4Go440 (painful 🙁)
1gb RAM
nForce3

So it actually meets or exceeds the desktop everywhere except the video

my rig is very similar to that (a8n, 3200, 1 gig mem) and i saved a lot by getting this psu and i also saved by getting rebates with my memory and case.

why don't you just get a 6800 GT AGP for your pc

thats what i was thinking, just get a new video card, maybe another gig of ram if you really needed it. is the 3200 going to be that much more powerful than the 2800? im out of the loop on cpus now

Eh, I'm still running a Barton 2500, with a gig of ram and a 9700 pro. I think about upgrading every once in a while then I think... why? Then again what with new games being so crappy and all, 80% of the games I play are at least 5 years old.

Actually, no. And that's what's so damned confusing. I don't have *TIME* to play all the newest, bleeding-edge games. I only play a scant few of them these days, and give up on most of them as soon as I realize that the story sucks a nut.

And as for why I don't want to go to an AGP version of the PCI-E cards, I'd still have to upgrade the PSU, and I *HATE* pidgeonholing myself into dead-end hardware. My AGP boards are worthless on the open market, and spending $300 on something equally worthless isn't something I can mentally justify.

i used a 300w liteon when i had a 6600gt, was a good card, if youre not gaming much it should do fine for you and you wont need to change anything else. a 6800 something something may do fine as well. no need to spend all that cash if youre just a casual gamer.

Buy one of the Uli PCI Ex+AGP boards, I got mine for $65 shipped and absolutely love it.

Another $350 for a Dual Core 3800. <--F'in love this thing.

Voila awesome upgrade and potential for later for just under $420.

I used to, but I transferred "the itch" over to my Cadillac so I don't really even have money to spend on computers these days anyways.

Upgrade video card. The rest is OK for the most part.

I am still using a xp 2000+, though I don't game. It does everything I want. I do want to get a different video card and get a seperate tv tuner. There is always something new to spend money on. I haven't seen any games I really want. If I do get into gaming I will just get a console because it is so much cheaper in the long run. Plus it can be viewed on a TV and not a small monitor. Well small I guess is relative. I have a 19" monitor and I am happy with it. I have a 27" tv that would be better to play games on. Don't get me wrong I love tinkering with computers, but it is an expensive hobby. I can use the money on other things that I need, and not want.

😕 I thought AT was a computer enthusiast forum. The number of people suggesting substandard power supplies and motherboards in this thread is greater than the recommended number (0).

Lovely, especially since I don't *HAVE* $154.99.

My direct deposit somehow fell through the cracks for the first pay period, so they're doubling my second one.
