Every time I show new pics to co-workers, I'm always asked 'do you have a website?' Embarrassingly, I would say no. So now I want to get SOMETHING up there. Anyone have their own site? I want to pick a domain name, and then have it hosted by a company that caters to photographers and might have templates, or services we need to get started. I googled a few times, but it seems most results were for hosting co's I never heard of.

The biggest concern of mine is people copying my pictures. I want to disable anyone trying to right click on my photos. Or something like this. If someone wants to buy a pic, can this be setup by the hosting company?

Not sure how much this will run me. Can I get started with website address I choose, and I dunno, 1-2GB of space to put pics? I'd like to spend maybe $50 or less upfront and then $10-20 per month for hosting.

Again, all of these numbers are just guesstimates, not idea how much any of this will run. Are there any reputable guides online for to show how to do this?

Thanks everyone!

Domains are relatively cheap. Namecheap or godaddy are very popular ones.

Hosting can be a biatch. Some offer image galleries as one of their services, others don't.

If not, install and configure one. I personally like Gallery.

If you have questions, let me know

Sorry, I might of garbled the above. I do want a service to do all the heavy lifting. So I pay the fee, mess around with a few templates, punch in my info, upload pics, etc. But I really really want to be able to have a company do this AND be able to pick out my own domain name.

Is this harder?

3 steps

1) Register domain with GoDaddy.com or NameCheap.com
2) Sign up for web hosting either free or paid.
3) Website content. Most web hosts offer a control panel such as cPanel or DirectAdmin which have pre-installed image gallery scripts coppermine and gallery. You can install either gallery in about 2 minutes. As for disabling theft of your images that's a little out of my realm.[/L].

Do you have AIM, GoogleTalk or Skype?

If you don't want to mess around with the installation of the photo gallery yourself, just send me a PM and I'll be glad to help. I'd also be willing to guide you through it, with the latest autoinstallers you can do it within a matter of clicks.

As far as the theft of images, you will want to watermark them. Most image gallery scripts support ordering images, but you'll have to manually send the full versions to avoid having them uploaded on the server.

how's this then. Buy a domain, Buy hosting package. I'll setup everything you need.

I do charge money for my time though.

edit: or you can do it the way DeviousTrap suggests. I actually recommend his way. You'll learn a lot in the process. Best way out there!

Don't mind buying the URL on my own, with whatever I can find available. But once I get it, will smugmug, or whatever will let me use it?

By the way, if you really don't want the hassle of setting of your own website for image hosting. Might I suggest a website called flickr

It is essentially a image web hosting site. Might be all you need.

from what i read about smugmug, you don't even need your own website for it. It's a web hosting image gallery for those who don't have their own website. Unless I read the description wrong.

AFAIK flickr just does hosting, they don't do anything to prevent theft nor do they give an option to buy pictures.

yes, you don't need your own domain for it, but i believe if you get Smugmug pro, you can have your www.domain.com domain redirect to it just like that.

Great point!

What I really want is a image hosting website, BUT be able to have my own domain name......are they not mutually possible?

my deepest apologizes. i read the client requirements too fast.

you are quite right. This wouldn't even work using the gallery software without javascript tweaks in it (simple enough to do, just not there by default)

Sadly enough, DeviousTrap pointed me towards one of your biggest concerns which did not originally register in my head when I first read your requirements.

I do not believe Flickr stops others from copying images on the net.

I believe your best option would actually be to have your own domain, have an image gallery software on there customized for your needs (ie, no right clicking) mixed with an e-commerce site to allow purchasing of pictures

I have a hosting setup through 1 and 1, it runs me about $5/month for 200GB. My domain registration is $6/year, and I just use Gallery 2. It was incredibly easy to get set up.

Mine's a pretty humble site, but it does the job for me pretty well.

Depending on how evolved his business is, I'd be strongly suggesting paypal unless he's planning on becoming international.

Need I remind you that "easy to setup" for you might actually not be such an accurate statement for someone else?

I know, many of us are geeks here. Those who aren't don't view things so simple. Just an FYI

What Zim has is actually very easy to set up. The OP's project gets a bit more complicated as you have to factor in security and ecommerce, but that's why I volunteered :p.
