I'm looking to get a new Video card

Hey Guys,

I'm looking to get a new video care and I've been greatly leaning twords getting:

Leadtek nVIDIA GeForce 6600GT Video Card, 128MB GDDR3, 128-Bit, DVI/TV-Out, AGP 8X, Model "A6600 GT TDH" -RETAIL.

But a freind of mine told me that he thought he was some where here on Anandtech that there is a way to get the 6800-the cheap version...and just enable the pipeline...or something to that end. Does any one know if this might be true or where I can go to read more on buying the lower end nvidia 6800 and just using some software to turn on it's disabled features?

Also has any one ever heard of http://www.buyxg.com/ or bought any thing from them? They are the ones offering the card I'm thinking about getting, but I've never heard of them before. I found them on pricewatch. Newegg is selling the card now finally, but they want $220....so...saveing some cash would be nice...cuz I was really wanting to top out in spending at $200.

any thoughts/ideas or comments would be great.

Thanks,

DAx

Nothing wrong with getting a 6600GT for $200 bucks... good cards. As for reputation of a company, you need to go to Resellerratings.com for a low-down on the company's reputation.

Now on the 6800 matter, YES, you can use software like Riva Tuner to unlock the pipes... not hard to do at all... of course the key is that a vanilla 6800 is probably going to cost a lot closer to $300 bucks then $200 bucks. You said you don't want to spend more then $200, so I seriously doubt you'll end up with a 6800 unless you buy one used or at an auction.

If $200 bucks is your cap, then you'll probably end up with a 6600GT (not a bad card).

also I was wondering in this card....I only have an AGP mobo, but the pci-e versrion...of the video card...is there a big diffrence?

Well, if you have an AGP motherboard, you need to MAKE SURE you buy an AGP video card, because you're only going to be able to use a PCI-E video card if you are willing to shell out for a new PCI-E equipped motherboard and CPU at a minimum.

So make sure the video card you buy is AGP. As for differance, PCI-E is a little better then AGP, but not worth going out and building a whole new system just to get PCI-E (unless you just have money burning a whole in your pocket).
