I think benchmade has the best massproduced knives in the world.
anything by them is good...but expensive

YOU DONT NEED A BIG KNIFE!

get a 4-6 inch one, unless you want to kill someone/something. even a good folder will do.
seriously a big knife weighs a lot.

As a USMC infantry sergeant I carried a Cold Steel Recon Tanto everywhere.
I would also reccomend the SRK from cold steel also here

as another endorsement, when I was on ship one time the entire SEAL detachment on board (about 13 guys) carried recon tanto's also.
I never had a problem with my tanto in water, that epoxy coating is TOUGH!!:D

The only reason they get such praise from the magazines and vendors is because of the perks they give for doing th advertising for them.

That would not be the only reason. I have an LTC Kukri that I have used summer after summer for a number of years and could not be happier. Wouldn't go backpacking without it. I also use a Master Hunter during deer season. My personal experience (and others I know) has been nothing but good. I don't know about the returns. I bought the Master Hunter as a factory 2nd (at a tremendous discount).

My experience is with Carbon V blades (probably not the best for underwater use), but have heard great things about their stainless blades.

I know 4 or 5 avid outdoorsmen who would always look at Cold Steel first.

Well, I already have a couple folders and multitools, but I want something to compliment the smaller knives. Naturally, I won't be able to carry the larger knife all the time, but that is what the multitools are for.

One of the first decisions you need to make concerns how much you want to spend. Your last comment was that you had eliminated the Buck.

I have basically that same knife, and will say that I used it for more than 15 years of fishing/hunting. It's hard to believe that it cost $67. I think I paid around $25 (but that was in 1980).

Beau,
Do you sell Timberline knifes too? I have a Specwar I use for diving and carry while hunting, yes I know its kind of overkill and all, but I am looking at getting one of their folders too. Thanks for any help. BTW I got a KBar while I was in the Mairnes, great knife, but not a dive knife at all.

Becuase I want to cut things, not shoot them or blow them up. ;)

So ffmcobalt, you like your KA-BAR? Have you ever used it around water? How did it do?

Like the title says, I'm looking for a good fixed blade knife...It would be a general purpose knife, but I would also like it to hold up under water. I'm going on a canoe trip, and I don't want it to fall apart if it gets wet/submerged.

I have been considering the SOG SEAL 2000 or the Tigershark, but now I've seen some other good possibilities.

One of the others is the classic Buck 119. I have also considered the KA-BAR fighting knife and a couple Cold Steel products.

Anyone else have any suggestions or comments? TIA

I have the SOG SEAL2k, and I've used it while diving, hiking, and so on. It's an excellent knife for the price. I highly recommend it.

Actually, I'm a little afraid to keep it wet. It's one that if I have to get it wet, I finish the job and dry it off. But I'm that way with all my knives. :) If it gets dirty, I don't hesitate rinsing it and drying it. But as far as working in water, I don't have a problem keeping my grip if I'm working quickly under water. Is there something specific you're looking for as far as water use?

Well, the ability to double as a dive knife would be nice, but that is secondary.

Also, about the KA-BARs, if I got one, it would probably be one of the new ones. The kraton handle and kydex sheath would eliminate my problems with leather and water. Now to find a good price...

I got mine on special for $30 at a gun&knife show. :D I have the USMC engraved version w/ the leather sheath that has the USMC emblem pressed into it. The handle of mine is leather, but it's 24 disks of it compressed so hard that they virtually become one piece. Getting it wet is okay with me, but I wouldn't use it as a dive knife (prologed exposure).
