I'm looking for a good fixed blade knife.

Like the title says, I'm looking for a good fixed blade knife...It would be a general purpose knife, but I would also like it to hold up under water. I'm going on a canoe trip, and I don't want it to fall apart if it gets wet/submerged.

I have been considering the SOG SEAL 2000 or the Tigershark, but now I've seen some other good possibilities.

One of the others is the classic Buck 119. I have also considered the KA-BAR fighting knife and a couple Cold Steel products.

Anyone else have any suggestions or comments? TIA

Just go with a KA-BAR. If it's worked for the Marines for over 50 years, it should work for you too.

I'm just worried that the leather handle will fall apart if it ends up underwater...anyone used the KA-BAR underwater?

I have the Seal 2000, Seal Pup, and the Tigershark. (We sell them where I work, and I could probably get you a pretty good deal :)) Excellent knives, I use them for diving mostly. Very durable kydex handles and sheaths. I've gone diving in salt and fresh water probably 20 times, not so much as a flake of rust on the blades and they still have thier edges. Anther knife you may want to consider is the Benchmade Nimravus. It is more expensive, but superior in construction and comes with a lifetime warranty as well.

Edit, added link to the nimravus.

That Benchmade looks very nice! But its out of my price range for now...:(

Thanks for the feedback on the SOGs! One more question, has the powder coat worn off on any of your SOGs?

BTW, I would be very interested in any deals you could get me on the SOG knives! Price was really my only problem with the SOG knives. Email me, PM me, or AIM me at ILuvRockets with more info on the SOGs!

The powder coat is still intact on all of the blades. Which knife are you going to most likely get, and I'll look up some pricing for you. The Tigershark is rediculously large. If you're going to be using it for rafting, you may want to consider just getting the Seal Pup, as the 2000 my still be a little large for the task.

I've got the Seal pup and have noticed that the sheath wears away at some of the powder on the edges of the knife, still great though, and the perfect size for a utility knife. It would definitely be my recomendation.

I think I'd probably be looking at the SEAL 2000 or Tigershark. Rediculously large is right up my alley! This canoe trip will probably just be a one time deal anyway.

I'll try to get on ICQ...I used to use it, but I hardly do anymore...

HAHAHA! I knew someone would say that! Like Beau said, its great for a dive knife, and its also a good compliment to my smaller folders and my Leatherman multitools.

It comes in hand when a 15' bull shark is coming straight at you with it's teeth bared. ;)

what did the shark turn around when he saw the blade was 9" instead of 6"? besides your supposed to punch the shark in the nose if he comes close to you.

We sell those too.

I have and love the Legend 800 multitool (~$80). Very nice.

Also the Guradian is pretty nice for a fixed boot knife. I'm not a big fan of thier folders because the handles seem a bit week when compared to Benchmades, even though they are Zytel.

Another knife to consider is the SOG Pentagon Same construction as the Seal series, but with a double-edged/serated/razor blade.

Naw, he turned around after I flexed my biceps ;) (not saying if it was because they were intimidatingly large or pittifully small :p)

Besides, I was just kidding about the shark.

The absolute best knives (mass-produced) are those of Cold Steel -- Special Projects. You will read nothing but praise for these in outdoors magazines.

Expect to pay up to $150 for a really good field knife. But, remember, you only buy it once. These knives will give your grandchildren great service.

We actually have more returns on Cold Steel knives than any other brand.

Edit:

The only reason they get such praise from the magazines and vendors is because of the perks they give for doing th advertising for them.
