I'm looking at buying an item on ebay for 3k. The seller is a powerseller with 800 postitives, no negatives and has been a member of ebay for 6 years. I just want to make sure I do everything right on my end to ensure I have maximum protection. Is papal my best bet? obviously I will purchase the optional shipping insurance. Is there anything else I should know?

"Preferred is PayPal, but will take Money Orders or Cashiers check. Please keep in mind payment must be received before shipping. I will take a personal check, but please allow 10 days to clear. Thanks for bidding."

too much hassle and too much time if things go wrong when paying by check. Same withg money Orders.

Credit Card is one phone call.

PP with CC isn't any better. It's not worst, but it's not safer. If you do a charge back on Paypal, all they'll do is get the collection agency on your ass, and you'll not only have to pay back the money, but also have a hit to your credit rating.

I've had only good experience with ebay so far (i've only done about 50 transactions or so though). The biggest thing i ever purchased was a little over $3k as well... but i drove 1.5hrs to pay in cash.

Pay with CC. I've been ripped before and only my CC in the end came though. Paypal did virtually NOTHING.

My brother paid through paypal for a motorcycle on ebay and got ripped off and they didn't do ****** about it. He had to make a complaint about the kid and then thye were like "we will monitor his next activity". BS! So basically he lost 3 grand that day. Don't trust no one on there!

When did this happen? And how much was it for? Because i find it hard that they didn't send the balance to a collection agency.

Escrow service.

You pay the service and release the funds once you get the as-advertised item.

Postal Inspectors have federal jurisdiction, does your CC company or paypal?

I believe it is a federal offense to commit credit card fraud. Some one in the know should be along shortly to confirm or deny this. And while postal inspectors definately have federal jurisdiction, it takes a long time to get them moving on a case and can take months for resolution.

Credit Card companies will refund the money by the next statement in most cases. And there are other ways to get the postal inspector involved, even if not using MO. It is a federal offense use the USPS to commit fraud or break other laws.

It's the next best thing to cash in an envelope.

JK of course. Yes, pay with CC anyway you can.

If you are willing to buy a $3K item sight unseen, and willing to send the money to a distant stranger before you get possession of the item, your judgement is severely impaired.

There is no protection for fools like you. You buy a ticket, you take a ride.

you enter your card information in your PayPal profile.

Log into your account... choose PROFILE... then in the middle column, choose CREDIT CARDS and choose ADD.

when you pay, choose the CREDIT CARD option. you will then get a screen asking if you are sure you want to use the credit card... they will tell you that you are protected just as well with a bank transfer... choose YES to continue with CREDIT CARD PAYMENT.

PayPal will then send the seller a credit card payment. The seller will never see your credit card info. The only difference to you is that instead of taking it out of your bank account immediately, you will get the charge on your next credit card statement.

You can pay with CC using pay pal. Some sellers don't like it because I *believe* they have to cover the commission on paypal's behalf. Whatever the reason, refusing to accept CC paypal, especially for a large item would be a definite red flag.

In a pinch, I have arranged to split commission costs with sellers before to keep the transaction on my credit card.
