I'm just not liking CVS. Eckerd was clearly better.

As many of you know, CVS Pharmacy bought Eckerd and has changed many Eckerd stores over to CVS.

The first time I was at a CVS was a year after they built the new one on Brookline up in Pittsburgh. It was weird. The store was only a year old and yet there was sort of a "dirty" feel to it. One of strangest parts of the store was the adhesive carpet squares. What a bad idea for a high traffic floor. To make matters worse, they were actually somewhat shag, so they collected a lot of dirt and gave the place an overall dingy look and feel.

Over the past two weeks, the Eckerd by me has been transformed into a CVS. The first thing they did, was stick those damn carpet squares down over on top of the tiles. WTF?!? The Eckerd had nice tile floors and they stick ghetto carpet tiles over them.

The second thing I noticed is the ghetto dress code. The same people work at the CVS then worked at the Eckerd, but the Eckerd shirts were nicer. The CVS shirts look like the kind of shirts you get for free for going to the AMD Tech Tour. Then I noticed the selection. Hallmark used to take up the center of the Eckerd. It only takes up the back walll of the CVS. Two coolers of beer is now one, but there's more wine (yeah... I always go to CVS to buy wine 😕 ) Less milk, no bread, but assloads of breakfast cereal. Bags and bags and bags of candy. The kind of bags of candy you would buy for halloween.

The last thing I noticed were the prices. HOLY CRAP! The stuff is expensive, unless something's on sale and you have a CVS card. I mean, I got Bounty paper towel rolls there for $5 for an 8-pack which is a damn good deal, but for the most part everything is really expensive. My beer prices are up 10% now. Looks like I'll be driving a little further to the Albertsons for quick grocery trips. 🙁

Anyone else missing their local Eckerd drug store? Anyone actually like CVS better?

aren't all drugstores overpriced compared to supermarkets

i never go the CVS / Rite-Aid for anything unless i was walking and came across one

but would never go there for grocery shopping

I didn't say I go there for grocery shopping, but I go there for the same reason I go to a 7-11 or Circle K. If I need something quick.... The thing is, Eckerd was still cheaper than 7-11 and I didn't have to drive as far. If all I needed was a loaf of bread for $1 or a 6 pack of beer, an Eckerd is quick and cheap. And if I'm there picking up a prescription, which I am at least once a week, then I can grab some stuff while I'm there. What's weird is the choice of groceries that CVS chooses to stock, and then the prices. Since the Eckerd changed to a CVS, the only shopping I've done is when I'm going to pick up a prescription and then I only buy itenms that are marked down with a CVS card because those items are considerably cheaper than they would be at a grocery store. But for beer, I'm getting better selection and prices at the BP across the street. I thought I'd never hear myself say that.

As a matter of fact I went into an Eckerds turned CVS last Saturday. I normally don't shop there but I was visiting my parents and they were picking up a prescription. I wasn't aware of the change since the Eckerds sign was still up and all. I noticed there were a lot of bare shelves and my mom said CVS bought them out. The store had this empty feeling to it but I hadn't been there beforehand so maybe it's always been like that. I prefer Walgeens although their prices aren't great either but they are two minutes from my house.

No. The transition is like that. They start by stripping out what they're not going to keep; the large Hallmark section, the extra beer cooler, Eckerd brand stuff, etc. And then they change the signs and then they add what makes it a CVS; the wine isle, the breakfast cereal and they stick down the shag carpet.

They also went through the trouble of reversing everything. This actually made me laugh because it was senseless. Eckerd doors are in the center, where (new) Walgreens and CVS are to the sides, so the moving around of stuff isn't to make the stores more uniform with CVS. Eckerd's photo center was on the right when you walked in, it's now on the left. The coolers used to be in the back right, now they're on the back left. If I was the guy with the hand truck that had to move that stuff, I would've been like "WTF?!?!" Of course, they could've moved them over because they had finished sticking down carpet squares on one side and then had to move them to stick down carpet squares on the other.

Hehehe. Nope, no shag carpet yet but the photo center was on the left hand side and as I said the shelves were quite bare. Overall it doesn't matter to me because none of them are nearby only Walgreens is.
