I'm irrationally frightened of bees

I have been since I was a child. As far as I know I did not have any sort of scary confrontation with a swarm of them or anything. I just can't not flip out when there's one or, much worse, several, if they fly close to me. Spiders, centipedes, ants, etc, none of these bother me, I just kill them and move on. But if it's bees/wasps I just get this violent chill through my body (adrenaline rush?) and have to fight hard not to freak. I'm getting shaky right now just thinking about them.

Anyone else have an actual phobia?

I don't know if it's phobia-level, but I'm very afraid of bees. Like you, I've never been stung or had any traumatizing experiences that involved them so I can't really explain it.

I'm afraid of them only because I've been stung so many freaking times. I always look on with amazement as someone simply swats at a bee.

My best (worst) confrontation with bees involved me entering a pine tree to look for a soccer ball. I found the ball, but I also found something else. I ran away and ended up with something like 20 stings all over my back. AWESOME!

I'm irrationally frightened that there have been like 4 posts this morning about insects or killing insects. Its about time we start thinking on our own, no?

I'm pretty terrified of them, but my fear stems from my allergy. If I get stung again there's a good chance I'll die. That sort of thing rather puts the fear of god into someone.

Jim: Question: What kind of bee is best?
Dwight: That?s a ridiculous question ?
Jim: False. Honey Bee.
Dwight: That?s debatable. There are basically two schools of thought ?
Jim: Fact: Bees eat beets. Bees. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.

Amazingly enough most people who have never been stung are far more afraid of bees and wasps than those who have been stung.

Maybe it's because once you have been stung you realize it's not as bad as you thought it was. It's really just mildly annoying and only right at first.

When I was 9 or so, I was climbing this small wall for fun. As luck would have it, when I pulled up, my face was staring right into the small wasp nest in one of the nooks, my eyes only about inches away from them.

Needless to say, those fuckers stung me about 10-12 times as I ran crying.

Strangely, I never developed a phobia of any sort. I just dislike them because of their stings like any other people would.

*shrug*, I think it's becaus I was quite the nature boy as a kid and always had fun catching bugs and doing shit in the woods.

Meh. I don't totally flip out but when they land on me I will slightly panic and swat them away. Then I keep an eye on it because some of those fuckers are vindictive. I also grew up in an area where ground bees were all over the place. Those sons of bitches are the worst because you don't even notice when you're near a hive till they sting the shit out of you.

Story from back in the day: Once time I was walking with a friend of mine behind my house. we had a steep hill behind our house that was decently dense forest. So here I am walking along when I step next to this dead tree and my foot sank into the ground. Upon pulling my foot out I notice all this movement on the ground and quickly realized I've just crushed a ground bee hive. I screamed "BEEEEESS!" and we ran like the fucking wind. Amazingly, we didn't get stung once! I remember looking back on the area and it just being a cloud of bees.

Not a bee but here's a pic I took of these big ol' hornets near my house. They were all over these flowers and measured about 2.5 inches long. They were nice enough to let me get a few inches away for this shot. http://www.pbase.com/broe/image/70832404

I've been stung by a wasp, and I still have an irrational fear of bees/wasps. So it seems I'm not allergic, and I know there's no good reason to be afraid, because odds are I won't get stung because I'm just leaving them alone, but that doesn't stop it from happening. It seems like it's below conscious level.

Good thought, but I had one of those allergy tests done as a child where they prick you with a bunch of potential allergens (pollen, dust mites, shellfish, etc) and while I'm allergic to a few things, bee venom was not one of them.

Exact same as me. Went camping with the family when I was really young, probably around 8ish, and found an entire nest.... Hair, clothes, all over. Still not quite over it.
