I ask you, wtf could possibly be malicious about a defrag? Fscking Windows Vista nanny features :|

Like someone is going to write a virus that makes your computer defrag its HDD for you or take control of your comp and do a defrag remotely...and if they did, why would you care? :|

Defragging has low level access to the hard drive. That is the issue. It's not about defragging it's about viruses and other malware. Yes, MS could build some sort of special signalling into the defragger so that the OS would recognize it and the prompt wouldn't be necessary but such a communication could be spoofed by viruses/malware.

But surely that would just allow the virus to defrag and bypass the prompt?

Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Turn User Account Control on or off and the "nanny features" will be gone.

thats not an option, and frankly because of the underlying structure behind windows then you do want to keep them all on

Suppose I write that Defrag virus and get it on your computer. You don't have the defrag warning on so I start my "defrag" process. It picks up data from one section of the harddrive...w/o the normal access controls. In my defrag I pick up your explorer.exe and replace it with goatse.cx then place it in the new "defraged" location. Because "defrag" doesn't have to deal with normal user permissions or security windows (and you) never know what I'm doing with your data. Say goodbye to grandma's christmas pictures and say hello to ****** in your grillz.
