I also liek the Nissan Pathfinder. Not the grandest of SUV's, but its basically like a Frontier. More farily priced than the rest and it'll do the job.

The Frontier is more like an Xterra... but they are both nice! (Pathfinder and Xterra) :D

Hey I finally found someone who has about the same problem that I do!
I'm 6'5", and I drive a small Saturn. My next car will most likely be a small SUV. I have tried a Dodge Durango and a Saturn VUE, and both of those cars are comfortable for me. (The Durango is not small obviously, I just sat in it to see what it was like.) The Honda CR-V is not comfortable for me. In the Saturn and the Durango, I my legs are out in front of me. The CR-V feels like a mini-van, and I am horribly uncomfortable in those cars because I am forced to sit right on top of the pedals.

I've actually had swollen/stiff knees after driving my Saturn for long trips ( greater than 1 hour). Unfortunately, I bought the car new, and the dealer won't help me with a bigger car, and since it only has 40,000 miles, I'm stuck with stiff knees for probably another 10 years! yeah.....

For less than 30K I like the X-terra. Rugged, has a nice rack on top to haul things and it's cheap.

The Pathfinder is a great choice, you should not rule it out. The Explorer is also a good choice. (Ford stock holder bias)

if you arent gonna use 4wd, dont get it. It adds quite a bit of weight and maintenence to the car. Diffs need to be changed every 30,000 miles, i change mine every year, transfer case needs to be serviced. If all you are looking for is a tall car, get an explorer 4x2, since its almost a car as it and it is cheap.

I will type op a huge opinion when I get back from job hunting.

I've been searching dealers' inventory (online) and they don't seem to have the basic (read: nothing extra added) Eddie Bauer Explorer. Can I build the car and have the dealer and/or forddirect order it?

XTerra is a very nice SUV... very capable and comfortable to ride in. Could use a bit more power though. The Pathfinder is getting very plush. It has features like leather and DVD consoles. My vote would be to go with the Pathfinder.

I don't think that Explorers have that much room, especially if yo have knee problems. I bought
a new F-150 extended cab in July and it has alot of leg room.

Dodge Intrepids have also have alot of leg room, so if you don't find an SUV that you like, you might
take a look at an Intrepid.

My wife has a '99 Intrepid. I'm 6'2" and if I put the seat all the way back I can't even touch the pedals. The problem is that you're practically sitting on the floor and your legs are extended almost straight out.

To be honest, I'm also looking at the Ford because I'm eligible for the X-Plan, which can save me some cash. I also save with GMC, but couldn't find anything I liked. Seems like all the hot SUVs are foreign.

The Explorer is now a good safe design, so long as you get a 4 door 2002 or later model. (avoid the 2 door designs)

The Chevy TrailBlazer is also a good design, something else to think about.

I don't like most foreign SUVs, they miss the point far too often. :)

You may want to look at Mini-Vans too. Last year I rented a mid-size car and they were out of them so they gave me a Dodge Grand Caravan instead. That thing had legroom galore and the seats were pretty high up. Has a 9.9 Edmunds consumer rating and they make an All Wheel Drive sport version for $30k. You can get a used 2002 for almost 10k cheaper.

If you get the Explorer, do not get the AWD version. Get the version with "control track" 4-wheel-drive. The AWD system has a history of problems (largely with bearings, clutches and sensors). We've had three Explorers, 2 with the 4x4 and one with the AWD, the only problems we've ever had with the Explorers have been with the AWD system and everyone I know who has had an AWD Explorer has had similar problems. Plus the 4x4 system handles snow better anyway.

I really like the Explorers, and if I were in the market for an SUV I'd get an Explorer XLT 4x4. That's a big "if" though, since I'd buy an F-250 or F-350 first because I'd use a truck mainly for towing and hauling.
