This Thread got me inspired to improve my guitar skills (actually, it made me want to sell all my stuff).

All I really do is fiddle around with Metallica songs and play scales, I don't feel like I'm improving my abilities at all. I need something more (and I don't want to pay for lessons :p).

Anyone care to share a guitar regimen that you feel has help your skills?

scales. 72 of them, i think thats all of em. when you get them all down then play them faster. when you can do them all in sixteenth notes at 130bpm without looking. then you will be good.

Play with other people

Or, start listening to music that uses different kinds of guitar (acoustic or classical), then make it sound good on your electric

Good advice on both parts.

pick up the John Petrucci Rock Discipline Book/DVD.

Its based around scales of course, but he runs through allkinds of different techniques and such.

other than that, just trying putting your fingers into weird positions, and try to do it at will, rather than taking 10 seconds to get them into place.

playing guitar is all about getting your fingers where you want them, when you want them there, without delay.

Yep. Rock guitar is like MMOs. You really can't get by on your own, because most of what you play was meant to be played in enssemble. It becomes boring (classical guitar is different, because in that case you are alone with the music).

Also: Get Guitar Pro and some scores from here. Practice some hard solos (it has a nice feature that slows them down and gradually speeds them back up until you nail them) until you can play them with no effort and cleanly.

I'm sorry, but that's the funniest guitar advice I've ever heard :D

Is that advice for playing or for after the show? ;)
