I've just registered a new domain with Namecheap, and it'll be hosted on lnguyen's server, and I was able to hit it in...

wait for it....

35 minutes!

That is unfvckingbelieveable!

It might have been less than that, but I was out of the room for half an hour, and tried it when I came back and it was working 😎

the first domain i ever bought in my life took three days to propogate to the GT network (although i could access my site from off-campus locations after ~24 hours). the next domain i bought started working on campus in 10 minutes.

anyway, aren't they modifying DNS so that it propogates changes once every 5 minutes instead of whatever the refresh rate is today?

It might propogate in that time for your ISP. But a lot of ISP's won't have dns updated that fast, so you'll have a chunk of people saying they can't access it until a couple days later.

Tested at work, home, and a friend, all could hit it 🙂😉

I need to actually write the site anyway, so no-one will be given the link for a few days anyway! 😉

Am now trying to teach myself PHP and templates 😕

yes, happened to me more often than not the last few months. very very quick DNS propagation. my own personal record is about 10 minutes. i changed the DNS server, working on a simple html 'coming soon' page on the new website, upload it, refresh the page and it has already pointed to the new page.

A lot of registrars are moving toward immediate updates which is great. It works well when you register a new domain or possibly when you change your name servers but regular DNS record changes are still going to take as long as they normally would.

I use GoDaddy for .COMs and it typically takes about 2 minutes for the domain to propagate (not fully, but enough for most people to be able to use it).
