If I type out a letter or anything pretty small I get an error saying I have low virtual memory. Even when I type something out and I want to either change the font size, or use the paragraph settings and make it double spaced it will give me an error saying it doesn't have enough disk space or virtual memory.

Can anyone please help me out? This is a Compaq based computer which is pretty new.

Thanks in advance.

edit

It is a Celeron 1 ghz computer, 256 mb ram, 40 gig hdd, Compaq computer. It is running Win XP Home edition and Office 97, but when I use any office app besides Outlook it will give me an error when either trying to print, or save a document. It'll say that there isn't enough virtual memory. What can I do to fix this?

My first guess -- Office 97's FindFast is a real dog. It truly sucks under Windows XP for some reason. Did you try disabling that? If it's running I recommend going into Control Panel (You may have to look under other options or use the classic view to see the FindFast applet.) Turn off indexing and delete the indices that FindFast has created. It is best to do it this way. (I hope memory isn't failing me.) Office 97 apps were hard-coded to look for index files, so they will continue to look at outdated index files before looking at the file system even though FindFast is not running any more.

I've also seen a couple of security utilities from Norton and McAfee go absolutely ape on Windows XP systems running Windows XP whenever Office 97 apps were opened.

You might want to crank up a session with Task Manager and watch the processes tab. Test the system by starting Word to see what processes are gobbling CPU time.

I never started using Office on my own systems until the XP/2002 version came out because of stuff like this. But I love the new version.
