I'm having a problem with half-life

Hi, recently I've been having a problem with half-life. after starting the game I get the windows "hour glass" icon appearing intermittently. When I exit the game it continues to appear until I reboot the system. It them only re-appears when I star a game again. I first noticed it while playing counter-strike and thought maybe it was my internet connection, but I tried playing half-life today (not connected to the internet) and I came to the the conclussion that the problem was half-life. I first noticed this problem last week and thought maybe it was because my HDD (running win98) had too much stuff on it so I grabbed a spare HDD and installed WinME, half-life, and my internet connection software, nothing else. The problem still exists. Check my sig for my system specs.

Anyone have any idea whats going? THis problem is really hampering my Counterstrike playing time because it seems to create excessive lag, even while not playing the game.
