I'm a noob, OK. But the last year with learning, reading, scoping forums like these I have managed to push forward with this thing called computer enthusism spactacular! Coming from a place of Dellism...Cough 8200 MX 400 that I thought I was cutting edge.. How many other lost souls are out there and how can I save them..

With the computer in my sig I have managed to turn up all settings to high even textures in BF2 and play with frames from anywhere to 35fps and up smoothly..

This may seem elementary to some people but I now can see that OC'ing really can save you money. Let's just say I have seen the light on just air cooling. Please indulge this gamer soul with some story's of fantasy and goodness.

Why does AMD allow for such gains in budget products? Is it just easier that way or what? I'm not complaining because I love it. Can I have a hug:heart:

Word to that, I started out knowing only that BIOS was the plural of the abbreviation of biology. Now I can play with technology build my own computer and have a lot of fun doing it--well sort of fun, at least most of the time--and I know what the os part stands for! And I think the b is for basic. So these forums are a good thing.

That's how overclocking started out - as a way to save money. Now its turned into an e-penis contest. But in earlier days, the best overclocking cpu was the Celeron 300A, which could be overclocked from 300 to 500 Mhz, giving amazing performance out of a $50 cpu. It bettered the performance of cpu's costing over $250.

Heck, I used to overclock old AT computers from 6 MHz up to 8 MHz. You had to solder on a new oscillator crystal onto the motherboard to overclock the system.

I just bought a Semprion 2800+, and hope to overclock it to at least 2.4 GHz, but hopefully to 2.6 GHz. This will give amazing performance from a cheap cpu, saving lots of money. If I actually did pay a lot of money for a cpu, I'd probably be afraid to overclock it...

Good stuff fellas... Keep it coming. I should of got 2x1gig sticks for overclocking but I wanted to save money, being I allready had the 2x512. But I can still OC a bit.

You wasted your money buying XMS memory, I'll tell you that. With that money, you could have probably buyed something close to a 3800 and never needed to OC. XMS memory is useless if your not gonna OC it.

Pretty good speed bump, but something this generous will not always be the case. Overclocking is something people enjoy, it can save you some money, but only if you don't buy super RAM like XMS and if you use stock cooling. That may not offer as big and OC, but you will probably save the most money. When you start adding in extra cooling and such, now you have to subract that from all the money you were supposed to save and find out that you did really save that much. But then the OC may not even be worth the time and effort to get it to this OC speed, unless you enjoy what you're doing.

Now, here's another question you have to take into consideration. Will you notice extra performance in OCing your CPU? From a 3200+ to a 3800+ I doubt you will notice anything, unless you are ripping or encoding/decoding stuff.

I personally hate OCing. And it's not because I'm not good at it, but it's just boring as hell and annoying. I like for things to work out the box and with as little maintenance as possible. So OC isn't my thing anyway.

I guess this is the reason why you got the extra pair of XMS then.

That was only 6 months ago, start of this year my old comp took ages to load a warcraft3 map, lol. And I couldnt play midrange games like cs:source or sims2.
