I'm grossly underpaid at work.

Get better job offers and drop them on your boss' desk along with why you should be earning more. Be prepared to back up your demands with action.

Never demand more money unless you are fully willing and ready to give a two weeks notice if your demands are not met or a favorable compromise is not found.

heres a suggestion... take the whole hair pie into the back of your throat.... that will earn you a raise! ROFL!

hmmm not a good idea.. If you threaten to leave and they make a counter offer that you accept, they will begin looking for your replacement IMMEDIATELY.

ask your boss what you need to do to get a raise

LOL this never works, you do what he says, and then he says ok I need to try to get this approved, and 6 months later you are tired of bugging him every day asking him the status while he blames it on "the higher ups"

You do this? or Rufio does this?

Man...when i worked in fast food, I was making 5.50 an hour... be happy, be very happy.

the purpose for my question really was...

I wanna determine if you are making comparable money (or less) than someone else who performs the same duties as you in a similar company.

Not in my experience. The threat of leaving is an employee's only valid bargaining chip. WTF else are they going to do? Beg? Threaten to lower productivity?

The threat of leaving is not a bargaining tool with McDonalds...
Ever heard of "Dont let the door hit u in the a55 on the way out."
They will replace you faster than you can say "Would you like fries with that?"

He was just kidding man, Rufio does not work at McDonalds.
He was making big money at his last job so I doubt hes working at MickeyDs right now.

Speaking of raises, I found out the best way is threaten to leave with another job offer ready. This is of course if you are a good employee.

I remembered I started at $26K and got a measly $1K raise 3 months later when I was doing an outstanding job.
3 months later I was ready to leave and they gave me a $3K raise.
Then I was really leaving this time and I got a big promotion and another raise + bigger bonus.

Then I moved to Cali and they tried hard to keep me but I was already set to move.

So I recently moved back to Orlando and got a job with the same company.
After 6 months, I was ready to move up again or move on.
I felt they weren't listenning to me so I went out and got another job.

Guess what they tried on 3 seperate occasion to change my mind and every time I thank them and told them I already got another job.
So they made 1 last push and gave me an offer I couldn't refused so I'm still here.

Just from experience, the best way to earn raises is to have another job offer in hand.

The only time I really had to ask for a raise was when I had my first job out of college. We were understaffed in my department so I was doing extra and I wasn't making that much. I got another offer, and told them I was splitting. I got a 20% raise out of the deal and my raises after that were always excellent because they knew I could easily find a position somewhere else. Where I work now I've gotten around 10%/year so I'm happy.
