Enjoy your camera!

I am still shooting with an old 20D. I am waiting to see if Canon puts out a $2K EOS-5D MkII before I make my next decision. But even if I don't go FF, I will probably still wait a while for the EOS-40D MkII. I just think Canon has some catching up to do after the D300.

Well the price for the current 40D is not bad at all. I doubt a 5D MkII would be an even $2k though.

My next decision is whether to get a 10-22mm and a 17-55mm IS or an 85mm F/1.2L :p

I am enjoying my 40D immensely. I've been trying to decide between the 85 1.8 and the 50 1.4 as my next lens and I've decided to go with the 50 1.4 due to the crop that already exists.

As for the 85 1.2L... I would be high jealous if you got one... or i'd have to find where you lived! :)

That would be a pretty easy decision for me, unless I did lots of portraits...the 85 f/1.2 is slightly more, but I think that having the ultra wide angle to standard will be far more important!

Enjoy your new 40D!

I do portraits and weddings. Thing is, the UWA is great for creative wedding shots too. I think I'd get more use out of those two lenses than the single 85 though. My 50/1.4 does great portraits.

I hope you enjoy your 40D as much as I do. I had doubts before pulling the trigger, but it really does pack some features in. I actually had a lot of fun going over the manual and setting up the custom functions and all.
The biggest thing I am looking forward to, is the C1-C3 presets on the dial, that should come in handy for my weddings.

I don't completely understand how C1-C3 work.

If I can setup them so that say one of them has exposure bracketing on, while others don't, and things like that, then I'll love them.

Well, there is the fact that the D300 is priced into a higher segment of the market than the 40D. The D300 is an amazing camera, no doubt, but it is too expensive for me. I'm curious what the D80's successor will be.

Although I did pick up an old 35mm film SLR recently, and I was instantly reminded just how big and bright that viewfinder is, and my D50's small and dim view severely limits my composition and manual focusing skills.

A lot of people in the Nikon camp are clamoring for a direct competitor to the 5D: call it a D300x with a full-frame sensor at the $2.5k price point. The D300 is the best ever APS-C sensor size camera to be released onto the market from any company, IMO, but it is still a cropped-frame body.

why does canon's $1000 mass market camera have to catch up to nikon's $1800 professional camera?

I'd say the 40D is a Prosumer, not mass market consumer. But still, there is quite a price difference. And with that, you get some additional things on the D300. I don't know that the D300 is really all that better than the 40D anyway.

Oh and my camera is here :)

i hate the word prosumer and refuse to use it. it's a mass market camera that is upwind from the rebel line, but it's only the first step up. like the eos elan. it's not that far off in price from the original digital rebel. especially taking into account inflation.

Now I want another 40D. The LCD simply dwarfs my 20D's :( It's so nice to look at.

I think I'm actually going to really like LiveView - mainly for macro focusing. You can do 10x magnification for focus, and you can also do DOF preview while LV is going. It's pretty cool. Might come in semi-handy at weddings for the "hold high above head and shoot down to dance floor" shots.

If you're actually angling the camera down, while holding it above your head, you won't be able to see the back of the camera anyway, since it doesn't swivel :p

You also seem to have the same darkening problem that DOF preview gives through the viewfinder.

I'm sure it will be a fun toy, and perhaps if you do a vast amount of macro work it would help, but I'm a long way from being convinced that it's something that I need in my next DSLR, not that I'll be able to avoid it ;)

It's a very nice camera indeed tho.

I tried it out - and I can see the LCD when I hold it up, if it isn't at too extreme of an angle. It helps that I'm already tall so I don't have to hold it up so high as others might.

Also - the DOF preview - yes it darkens initially, but then the camera adjusts and it shows a brighter view - I don't know if it simply increases the LCD's brightness to compensate or if it does a sort of "doubling" of the image displayed.

And the darkening isn't really a problem - it's just physics :p

I'm waiting for the $1500 5D MkIII. by then, the "60D" might have a retail price of under $800 :p Or, the "700D" will be under $400 new and have a decent grip and viewfinder. Hopefully I don't break my 20D till then.. haha
