Well, here's my experience. Back when these were THE drives to have (fast and quiet), I bought a dozen of them for use in both systems for my business and systems for my clients.

I've had a total of 5 of those 12 crap out on me. The first two that failed I went thru the RMA process w/ IBM, only to have them replaced with 2 refurbed 75GXP's. By that time, I was hesitant of using them. Over the next few months, the same thing happened to 3 more of the drives. At this point, I didn't even bother RMA'ing them because other manufacturer's drives had caught up performance-wise and IBM was still gonna replace them in kind, instead of w/ a different model.

Re the firmware, i'll probably try that on my remaining drives, but there's no way that I'd ever trust them w/ valuable data again.

If you have to resort to a recovery service, it will probably cost you somewhere between 1500 and 2000 bucks.
