I did read the OP, and I still don't see how you can be dumb enough to think that it's reasonable to say "I'll bank 2/3 and play with the rest"... because that's a lot of freaking money when you think about it. Taking a few hundred dollars and buying yourself something you've been wanting for a REAAALLLLLYY long time, that's cool... telling yourself you're going to take a few grand and blow it... and then needing to make a post to figure out HOW to spend this kind of money... that's just stupid. Clearly your life hasn't taught you the value of money. Maybe it's time to get out of the house, learn to pay your own bills and fend for yourself.

PS: Secretly, your parents don't enjoy you living with them. You are nearly a college graduate and they still have to pay for your room and food. They wish you'd move out so they can feel proud that their son has been raised to take care of himself.

Yeah, put it all in the bank. You can save every penny for your entire life, live excessively frugally, and have a gigantic bank account balance. Meanwhile, you can do nothing fun or interesting for your entire life, and when you die, they can read your bank statement as your eulogy.

It's the ATOT way!

Yes, this way in a few years, I can buy a bungalow in the suburbs, marry, have 1.7 children and contemplate killing myself every morning because I've done nothing interesting in my life.

... and not have worry about where your next meal is going to come from, or how you'll manage if you decide to take a vacation with your family, go to a foreign country with someone you love when you are at an age when you can truly appreciate it and feel happy that you could buy a new car with cash because you learned how to manage money.

Screw doing cool things now, I'd rather feel comfortable that I can live how I want through the majority of my life rather than spending all sorts of money when I'm young to do things that will be nothing but a few brain cells of storage space for the rest of my life.

Look man, it's your money, spend it how you want, do the things you want to do. I'm not going to tell you what you can and can't do with it, but I think you should hold that policy to the rest of the world, too. If you have to ask how to spend your money, it's probably not a good idea to BE spending it. Do what YOU want to do, not what others say would be cool. A trip to some place might be cool as hell, but if you're doing it just because you want to spend the money you have, you're going to suck at managing money when you're older.

BTW: If you have to comtemplate killing yourself over the fact that you've done nothing interesting in your life, you have some real sh!tty self esteem and you should probably just go ahead and get your life over with and leave the money for your parents to pay the funeral expenses.

I see what the disconnect is, now. You see me as someone irresponsible just looking to toss my money away instead of stashing it away from later. As I said in my OP, I already have some savings and with this money, I will have more than enough to feel comfortable moving forward.

If you see the good times in your life coming when you are older, that's you're prerogative. I see these (my 20's) as the best years of my life. I spend 50+ hours every week on school one way or the other. This summer, I've spent from May to now working at least 40 hours a week. Recently, it's been more like 6-7 days a week, 10+ hours/day; all this working at my expense.

I don't know about you, but that doesn't sound like a splendid way to spend my best years to me. Now that my project is coming to fruition, I'm going to have some discretionary income and a few weeks where I can finally relax and I do what I want.

After this, I'll be finishing up my BSEE degree and getting a job (or maybe create a start-up based on the work I've done this summer). I bet you can imagine how much vacation time engineers and self-starters get every year.

So you can kindly take your killjoy lectures about me worrying about next meal and how to manage my finances and walk them straight out of this thread. If I wanted advice on how to manage my money, I'd go to a financial advisor; in this thread, I asked for a fun way to spend a few bucks. If you don't have any fun ideas for me, I'll ask you to please refrain from posting again in this thread.

I disagree with the haters out there, I'm more frugal than most (read Millionaire Next Door, Poor Dad Rich Dad, good reads...), but the key is moderation. I think it's smart that you're not blowing the stash of cash you have, but you need to have some fun before you start your 9-5 grind. As long as you become more sensible after this splurg. I did so myself after I graduated (only had about 3-4 grand though) and 2 years later I put a down payment on my new house.

As for ideas... I went on a tour of Japan and visited some sites in China. Took a bus tour from the northern tip of Japan all the way down to the southern tip. I stopped in Hong Kong and Beijing in China and checked out some of the sights. Great Trip, great memories, don't regret taking it.

Another vote for ARUBA! If you've never been there, go! I can't wait to go back. Was just there at the end of March. I've never been to another Caribbean island but I'd rather go back to Aruba first.

At least you're banking $9k. If I had worked my ass off all summer I would MOST DEFINITELY take a 3-4 week trip across Europe. Trips are one thing I never regret, and if he wants to see the world while he's young instead of saving it for when he's older so he can get those extra options on his Buick why hassle him about it?
