Yes, buy running shoes. You would probably do fine with basketball shoes for a week or two of running, but after that you will likely start to experience pain.

I'm 20 as well. I run 3.5 miles 3-5 times a week and I notice a difference in types of shoes that I run with. Just buy some :)

running shoes will make a world of difference especially if you're going to be doing long sustained running.

I haven't ever had the luxury of spending as little as $40 on a pair of running shoes, but I like my Asics - Gel Cumulus VIII's. I just got them about a week ago for ~$70. That's the cheapest pair of running shoes I have ever purchased, I think. Good luck finding anything much cheaper than that.

run 2 weeks in whatever you've got, dress shoes, army boots, thongs. Reward yourself for sticking with it by getting a shiney new pair of the shoes of your choice. In that time you may identify things you need in your running shoes, pronation type, arch support, weight, width needed for stability, durability given the route, ventilation etc...

good advice.

as someone who plays ball and likes to run, your feet will thank you for getting a nice pair of Asics or Saucony. i wear my nikes for basketball, but i don't like them to go running for any long distances. otoh, running shoes offer no ankle support as bball shoes.
