As said above, start with a .22 so you can actually hit something to start with.

Bah, first time I shot a handgun I was shooting an H&K P7 9mm and two .38 specials with fairly short barrels. I had no trouble shooting them and consistantly put my shots in the center of the target with all the guns.

I shot a 357 magnum Ruger, and I could get groups as close as a half dollar size at about 45 feet. It was extremely accurate, but I had to take real slow and controlled shots, otherwise the trigger pull would throw my aim off.

So I'm about to go to my first shooting range in a couple hours. What gun should I try out?

My friend was saying a 9mm barretta is a good beginners gun. I want to try one that is smooth with very little kickback. I was thinking desert eagle .50

UPDATE

So I just got back. The place we were going to go, "shooters paradise" had a fire and was shut down. So we went to Gilbert's instead. They had a decent selection.

First I shot a 9mm barretta. I was pretty accurate with it, not much kickback and felt pretty comfortable.

Then I shot a 45 and there definatly was a difference. It felt a lot more sturdy, and although I was still pretty good with it, I wasn't as consistent.

Last, I got a 357 Magnum and boy was that fun. Shot out flames which caught me off guard and definatly was the hardest to control. But I still did decent with it.

Can't wait to go again and try some other ones. They didn't have a Sig otherwise I would have tried that.

Which .357 Magnum did you shoot? Smith & Wesson? Ruger? Colt? I'm kind of partial to S&W myself. Did you cock it first or did you use the long double action pull?

Oh, what kind of .45 did you shoot?

I own a Glock 9mm, a Colt .45 Officer's Model, a ParaOrdnance LDA chambered in .45ACP, a Smith & Wesson model 629 .44 Magnum with 8" barrel and a Beretta Tomcat (.32ACP). Fun guns! 😛 I also have a nice assortment of long guns.

I would like to get a S&W 627, but right now can't justify picking up another gun. Right now I got a S&W 629, ruger super redhawk 454, and a ruger P90, and it's probably been coming up on a year since I have fired any of them.

HK USP series. Just don't try any with a short barrel (<3.8") and light weight. They are very hard to control, tons of recoil.
