I spent 6 months in WV and couldn't understand why people were going out of their way to say "pop" instead of the drink name.
because pop is the correct term

Spoken like a northerner. A vague term ("pop", "soda") is not "correct" versus a specific term ("Mountain Dew", "Pepsi", etc).

As far as I know, "pop" comes from "soda pop." It's no more correct than the word "soda."
