are you shorter than ~6'3"?

is any of that muscle weight?

weight alone is not a good indicator of fatty fatness.

For 95% of people (99.9% of internet goers) it is a pretty good indicator. So when in doubt, just assume they're fat. Especially on the internet, where hey I'm just built that way or it's all muscle is a popular lie (sometimes they're even telling it to themselves).

Oh, I do assume. Don't think that I don't!

So, it's been a week I suppose. I feel incredibly sleepy a lot. My head is still kind of throbbing, but better. I'm already craving it a lot less in terms of the taste (just water sounds appealing when I'm thirsty now). The crappiest thing is just the fatigue. I didn't realize how much the caffeine, sugar, or both were really keeping me awake during the day I guess. I'm not functional through the whole day anymore. Not much else to report.

Just so I get some kind of cool points within this forum, I dont drink soda as much as some of the people here.

I probably drink about 10, large size, McDonald's cups of soda in a year! That might explain why I'm 28 years old and have YET to have a cavity.

I don't drink any pop any more. I stick to coffee, ale, mead, tea, and water. Also, I do not put any pollutants into my coffee to ruin it.

Used to drink between 2 and 3L of pop a day.... haven't been a regular drinker of pop for a couple of years .... ocassionally I'll get a Jarritos or some Goose Island grape pop, but .... it amounts to less than 1 liter per month....

High fructose corn syrup was presented to the soft drink companies as an alternative to sugar. The problem is that HFCS is not good for you. It actually leaves you thirsty and craving more product because it doesn't satisfy your thirst the way sugar does. The popularity of Mexican Coke and Pepsi throwback drinks shows that consumers want a choice.

I'm not singing the praises of refined sugar- it's not good for you either. The energy your body uses to break it down is the energy you get from it.

Good luck.

At one point I was really bad but I decided to slow down and so far so good. I'm not willing to actually quit altogether, that's like asking someone who likes beer to actually quit it completely. But I have slowed down quite a bit, and I have actually told myself at times randomly "ok, this week, no pop" and succeeded. And yes, It actually makes a big difference in weight loss and overall health. Nevermind the cafeine, or the fact that the acid is bad for your teeth. All that freaking sugar is really bad for you. 41 grams in a Pepsi (I know that because I have a can right here LOL) It's recommended that you have no more than 10 grams in a single day. Just to give an idea just how bad this stuff is.

Then you figure, well just switch to drinking juice or something. Yeah juice is going to rot your teeth even faster! You just can't win.

I haven't given it up completely, but I've cut back by about 50%. Not that I drank much soda before, but it makes a difference.

I'm in the process of waining off of it too. I drink a LOT. I used to drink a two liter or more a day of soda. Now I'm down to usually one soda with my dinner meal or when I get home from work. I used to be able to down that can in 10 minutes easy. Now it'll take me an hour or more, which is nice. I keep a water bottle with me all day and drink a ton of water at work or when I'm bored. I'm by no means fat, but I can see myself getting there if I kept my current pace up.

The way I figure, between cutting soda out of my diet and exercising 1-2 more times a week (run to gym, workout, run home) I should cut a significant amount of calories out of my diet and can still continue eating all the pizza, bread, cheese, and meat that I want!

While I agree with all your points, I think your stats are a little off on that one. That's incredibly low, even when only talking added/refined sugar.

Worked a couple months for a Sodastream distributor and got a lot of free material. No corn syrup, the regular formula is made with a mix of real sugar (<10g), sucralose and acesulfame K. The ones that use all natural sugar still has half the content of most regular sodas. Most don't have caffeine or not as much (only the Dr. Pepper and Mountain Dew clones have comparable amounts). Good stuff...and I'm strongly against diet-tasting soda. Aspartame is disgusting.

Yeah it seems really low, but I recall reading that somewhere on a health site. I doubt too many people even manage to stay below that. Even fruit has sugar in it.

Well, that's what I mean. The sites I looked up still ranged from like 40-100 grams, and they were only talking added sugar (not fruits).

1 breakfast coffee a day does it, brush after.

and yea soda is a waste of money, zero health benefits, and cash hole for corn syrup.

even coffee has some potential health benefits at least for the jolt it gives you.

keep water around, convenience beats everything else, laziness = water right in front of you, makes it the simple choice.
thermos intak bottles are some of the best designed sipper bottles, quick flip top means you don't spend a ton of time unscrewing a top just to take a sip.

once u go without soda for a while drinking it feels like you are drinking sugar syrup...gross.

I only drink water and unsweetened iced tea nowadays after my morning coffee. I agree that I didn't quit soda for any real reason and I don't feel better then when I did drink it but now I just can't stand it in any large quantity now.

Heh, came across this old thread. It's been nearly a year, so I thought I'd give an update:

Don't be too disappointed in me, but I *sort of* fell off the bandwagon a few months ago. Started slipping in a coke every now and then. I'm probably back up to about 4-5 cokes per week. That's still way, way too high. But it's a fraction of what I used to have: 4-5 cokes (at least) per DAY, not week. In general, I may have one with lunch if I'm feeling sluggish. But that's it. Nothing at night, certainly nothing in the morning.

I feel tremendously better than I did a year ago. There are many factors to this-I'm in a much happier relationship, I'm getting in some cardio almost every day, my job is bringing me more satisfaction. BUT some things I do feel I can attribute directly to cutting back on the soda: no more caffeine headaches. No more sugar crashes. I'm sleeping much better. Waking up in the morning is easier. No more heartburn (I used to get it frequently). I'm usually in a better mood, more optimistic and energetic. I've lost a little weight. My libido is much higher (since you all wanted to know, lol). I feel more confident and at peace with my life-way fewer instances of anxiety than I used to experience.

I dunno; I really should go back to the cold turkey. But as Deeko said, maybe the moderation thing here is ok. Just as long as I'm not guzzling tons of it everyday, and I'm actually drinking much more water in its place.

Good job. Moderation is great but IMO 4-5 sodas a week is still too many. Try to limit it to 1-2

I've been wanting to slow down as well. I was off all week and I think I went through like 2 12 packs, it's ridiculous really. I don't see the point of quitting completely, have to remember there are people who drink way more alcohol than we do pop.. THEY have a problem, ours pales in comparison. But moderation is key. The hard part is trying to find something to replace it. Sometimes you just want something other than water to sip on. All the alternatives are either just as bad for you, or worse.
