I switched to diet soda after realizing just how many calories I would consume just in drinks alone. That doesn't include just soda, but also juices and such. I also drink all caffeine-free at home as well, but some people give me a weird look when I tell them that I drink Caffeine-Free Diet Mountain Dew. :hmm: I usually switch between that and Caffeine-Free Diet Coke.
 
Holy shit I think that "soda" addiction must be something exclusively American...

OP: Good luck to you. I quite smoking a while ago (increased tax) and the first week or so wasn't easy, but after that it is smooth sailing.

Hog wash, I went from drinking 2+ liters a day to 4 months ago where I stopped drinking it cold turkey. I absolutely don't feel any better at all, let alone much better. I feel no different what-so-ever. And I drank 2+ liters every single day for close to 17 years. You won't believe how much better you feel because you won't feel any better. Soda's delicious and I miss it dearly.

drink more water and eat healthier. you won't miss it.

I do, and I still miss it dearly, if it wasn't for my GF not wanting me to drink it I would never have stopped. If we ever break up I'll be right back to it. There's nothing like an ice cold Coke. I drink a lot of water, and frankly it sucks big time.

Wasn't the law that all citrus-based drinks couldn't have caffeine? I remember hearing about that when I was trying to cut caffeine out, and I had a hard time finding caffeine-free Mountain Dew. 😛
 
I used to drink about 2 a day when I was younger and I thought that was a lot.

Not sure how you can do 5-6 daily.
 
No, really. I mean it. 🙂

I think I even started a thread about this about 3 years or so ago here on ATOT. I failed in my plight that time. I'm really going to quit this time. I have the support of a girlfriend who lives with me, and we eat nearly every meal together, which should help.

I drink a LOT of pop-it almost exclusively replaces water in my diet. Probably a minimum of 5 or 6 "cans" (or equivalent amount) a day. I eat reasonably healthy, exercise often, and am not overweight (in fact, I'm kind of skinny). But that doesn't mean I feel as though my mind and body are running at 100%.

I'm tired of spending the money. I'm tired of rotting my teeth and fighting gnarly breath. I'm tired of literally "needing" the caffeine because I get headaches without it, and spiking/crashing from the huge sugar intake. I'm tired of not sleeping well, and feeling anxious and nervous all the time. I'm not naive enough to think that quitting cola is going to solve all my problems, but it won't hurt. Certainly, the stuff isn't doing me any good.

Anyway, I'm gearing up for the headaches, grouchiness and grogginess that I'm sure will ensue in the coming days and weeks. Wish me luck...
I am sure your kidneys will be happy about this decision.
 
Why does everyone say carbonation is bad for you?
It is simply carbon dioxide... how is that bad? You simply belch it up or absorb it.

I think people might mean the acidity.

BTW, I drink 4-5 diet sodas a day. I am drinking a can of Diet Mt. Dew right now. 🙂
I wish I could stop too... but they are so damn refreshing and wake me up.
 
I just about stopped soda awhile ago too, but not quite intentionally. I am currently hooked on Simply Orange high-pulp orange juice. Maybe it's not entirely a perfectly positive thing, as it's still a sugar-laden drink, which is also fairly acidic. But at least it's got some usable vitamins in it.
Soda's sure got it beaten in terms of price though.

And it looks like orange juice has a bit of potassium in it, so I'm also a little more radioactive now. 😀

I never understood the people that think it's stupid to call it pop or call it soda or whatever. Technically, they are soft drinks, but to act like any of the other commonly accepted terms for them are wrong is just dumb.
 
I really want to give up all soda.

I'd rather just give it up than switch to diet.

Maybe I can get myself trained to be ok with unsweetened tea as a replacement as well as water when I'm out at places to eat.

When I go out to eat, that's the worst for me. I drink 2, 3, maybe 4 refills of soda. It's horrible for me.

Yeah, a lot of people are mentioning diet (for the record, my addiction is to the full-cal stuff). As I understand it, diet's been shown over and over again to be no healthier an alternative, in some cases worse. Either you're sugaring yourself to death (well, HCFS-ing) or chemical-ing yourself, and the chemical people actually tend to be just as or more obese. So, I'm just throwing it all out.

Day 1 here-I definitely already have a big craving for it, but combating that with copius amounts of water and milk. 🙂

not trying to be a dick, but are you over weight at all or have a gut?

reason I am asking is because I work out regularly and am not fat by any means, but wasn't exactly mr 6 pack either. but if you saw me you would just think i work out and am not fat at all.

I used to drink 2 20oz, sometimes 3, a day at work (diet dr pepper) and then some at home maybe but not always, and when I started to go on my cutting cycle.and trying to lose weight, i went to drinking only 1 soda a day, and it's the AM one to help wake me up at work.

with in like a week i noticed that my stomach did not feel nearly as bloated, and that wasn't cutting out soda complete. i replaced my afternoon soda with a litre of water instead.

now the reason i'm asknig is if you had a belly now was that maybe you didn't notice it as much since yo ustill have a belly. i could definitely notice a difference, and it was just diet soda (calorie-less).
 
It always amazes me when I see how much soda people drink. I maybe drink a it once every few months if that, few times a year at most. I drink water and that's it besides a small glass of juice when I wake up each morning.
 
Soda is still my guilty pleasure when I go out to a restaurant for lunch or dinner. That's the only time I allow myself to drink its syrupy goodness.

Also largely cut out soda's replacement in my house, which was Simply Lemonade - still drink it occasionally, but try to limit myself to water when at home.

Wish I could cut soda out entirely, but it still has too powerful a grip over me. I don't drink coffee at all, so I'm inclined to keep this vice... for now.
 
I used to drink a TON of soda. Coke, Sprite, Dr. Pepper... you name it, I drank it. I remember sitting around one day and thinking, "Jesus Christ, this shit is BAD for me." After that I switched over to diet everything (not that much better, but still better than regular stuff). These days I don't even drink much soda; I mostly drink diet iced tea and water (sometimes with those little 10-calorie flavor packs) with the occasional glass of apple or orange juice.
 
I gave up soda a while ago. Can't stand the stuff anymore, it tastes way too sweet. All I drink is water, unsweet tea and coffee

Same here.

I stopped drinking soda 5 years ago. It's amazing how much better I felt after doing so. I stopped having acne (wasn't terrible to begin with, but was there), my IBS symptoms reduced significantly, and I just felt better overall.
 
Most people I know who drink more than a couple cans of soda a day are fat, and they get fatter with every year that passes.
