I'm going to give up soda

No, really. I mean it. 🙂

I think I even started a thread about this about 3 years or so ago here on ATOT. I failed in my plight that time. I'm really going to quit this time. I have the support of a girlfriend who lives with me, and we eat nearly every meal together, which should help.

I drink a LOT of pop-it almost exclusively replaces water in my diet. Probably a minimum of 5 or 6 "cans" (or equivalent amount) a day. I eat reasonably healthy, exercise often, and am not overweight (in fact, I'm kind of skinny). But that doesn't mean I feel as though my mind and body are running at 100%.

I'm tired of spending the money. I'm tired of rotting my teeth and fighting gnarly breath. I'm tired of literally "needing" the caffeine because I get headaches without it, and spiking/crashing from the huge sugar intake. I'm tired of not sleeping well, and feeling anxious and nervous all the time. I'm not naive enough to think that quitting cola is going to solve all my problems, but it won't hurt. Certainly, the stuff isn't doing me any good.

Anyway, I'm gearing up for the headaches, grouchiness and grogginess that I'm sure will ensue in the coming days and weeks. Wish me luck...

Gl man, I actually did this for a year (gave up salt, too). It was hell, but I felt better after about a month. That first week was TOUGH! Keep sugar free gum handy and pop some in when you want a soda, it works wonders

I drink at least a 2-liter of Dr. Pepper a day.

VIVA LA SODA!

Actually I gave up drinking everything except water for a few months cold turkey one day. Was easy until our fridge filter went out and it started tasting gross. Then I went back to other stuff.

i gave up soda. it was a very difficult habit to break. i rarely drink it now, not even the diet stuff. the trick for me was to keep a bottle of water on hand at all times. had the habit of wanting to hold something to drink from. now i find soda to be too sweet.

One trick to giving up something is to 'replace' it with something else. Like using the money spent on those "cans" to go buy some videogames, or get a girlfriend a big gift, making a new time consuming hobby, etc.

Thing is, just get something to keep your mind busy when you would usually go for soda. Find something more awesome to do or look at. All the best! 🙂

soda is disgusting.

You probably wont believe how much better you're going to feel if you dont punch out this time.

Diet Soda is basically my only vice. I drink about 5 or 6 cans of Diet Pepsi per day. It's basically my coffee and cigarettes. I drink it with every meal, and it's the first thing I drink every morning. I love the flavor and the feeling of ice cold Diet Pepsi on my tongue. Most of the time, I'm not even thirsty when I open a can. I've been hooked on it for about 7 years, and I don't think I could give it up very easily. Regular soda doesn't do anything for me. Leaves me feeling bloated and full -- can't stand it.

Good luck to you.

I can get past the diet thing, but Pepsi???!??!?!?!

I didn't really notice a difference when I quit drinking soda, but when I drink more than a small amount now, I feel half sick. I used to drink 90oz+ per day, but now any more than 12oz every so oftenn is too much. I still like Coke, but only in small amounts.

It's weird. I always used to hate Diet Pepsi. During my youth, I drank a lot of regular Pepsi. In an effort reduce sugar consumption, I switched to diet. Took me a bit to get used to the taste, but man, now I crave it all the time. I go through a 36-pack in about a week.

Coke > Pepsi.

Diet Pepsi > Diet Coke. Seriously, Diet Coke is like liquid cardboard that has fermented in rotten pickle excrement and was then used to wash the last of the great pharaohs.

Diet Coke is fine. I drink it all the time, mostly because my mom is hooked on it. Pepsi overall is D:

I stopped drinking soda when I a wee lass, like 10 years ago. I don't remember it being that hard, but I don't even like it now. At least by itself. Sometimes I use it in mixed drinks, but even then, I prefer non-carbonated juice. I'm glad it's hasn't been a habit for me for most of my life.

I have no idea why people drink soda the way they do. It's so god damn useless.

The only thing anyone should ever dirnk is water, beer, wine/liquor/meade and some type of juices.

Soda? wtf....

I mean, it has uses for mixing with liquor, but that's the only reason it should be used. For fuck's sake--it's origins are in quack medicinery.

I let myself drink it on the weekends only and even then I only end up drinking one, maybe two cans a day if that.

It's just junk calories.

Lately I've been kinda turned off pop. Don't really know why, maybe it's cause I've started drinking more water and my body has learned that I just feel better when I drink water over pop. I still think it's the best thing to drink while eating, and I'll have half a glass of it with my lunch (milk at dinner) but I don't drink it much anymore the rest of the day. I used to drink a lot of it.

Goodness, I thought my "1 to 2 can" of Coke per day habit was bad, some of you are even worse. Regular can of Coke = pure goodness, no "diet" soda for me.

I am trying to cut back down to 1 can per week or at most 1 can for one day then skip then 1 can then skip <crossing fingers>.

Hog wash, I went from drinking 2+ liters a day to 4 months ago where I stopped drinking it cold turkey. I absolutely don't feel any better at all, let alone much better. I feel no different what-so-ever. And I drank 2+ liters every single day for close to 17 years. You won't believe how much better you feel because you won't feel any better. Soda's delicious and I miss it dearly.
