The newer iBook power supplies accept both 110 and 230V input so don't waste your money on Apple's adapter set (you may check the label on the power supply). A normal socket outlet converter from the local do-it-yourself store will do the job.

Hamburg is near the sea so there should be local fish specialities. Try Spätzle (dough pellets) with cheese. That's not really a local speciality though. I don't like Sauerkraut very much and my brother told me that you Americans put it on your Hot Dogs anyway, so what's the big deal? If it's not something new to you, don't try it if you don't feel like it ;) But hotpots are a German speciality. There are many Turkish fast food shops in Germany, you could try a Kebab if this should be something new to you. Again not really a local speciality :) Oh and check out the beer from the local breweries. Save some room in your stomach for the good desserts!

If you like licorice, go to a kiosk in Sweden and spend some money :)

All the highways with blue signs are autobahns. And driving over the posted/suggested speed limit of 120-130kmh is normally allowed, however most insurance companies will not cover you if you are driving this fast. And at these speeds if you are in an accident, right or wrong, you are automatically at fault according to German law.

Have fun.

HAHAHA, your dad was ripped off. You could pick up a SS Dagger for like 15DM.(This was before the euro. 1 DM was about $0.75.)

Wow, man...the autobahn is everywhere...it's our highway system and generally without limit...when not limited specifically... ;)
Northern Germany is nice for driving as the highways are straight and empty :D

Well, it is just like in the US every (major) city is close to an autobahn. There is no use for freeways to start and end in the middle of nowhere - is there.

Eck! This is a German original but I hate it...don't order a lot until you try it. Taste like sour slaw to me.

Most American airports (bigger ones) have at least one tech store. Try there for that Apple kit.

This is no german original - every region is very different in food. While you might find sauerkraut in Hamburg it certainly aint typical nor widespread up there. Now if you were to go to Bavaria that might be different story. Typical in Hamburg would be fish (seafood in general).

Oh and a note on money. See that your bank card has maestro than you will be able to get money anywere and pay almost everywhere. To draw money from an ATM with a CC will cost you an arm and a leg.
When I was in Southafrica I made the experience that it is cheaper to pay cheap thing with CC (because the out of country fee is in percent) while it is cheaper with Meastro system for the more expensive things because it had a fixed out of country fee.

dont get him into trouble ;) : there is genrally a suggested speed which is no speed limit (130kmh) . However if he is driving faster than the speed limit, something the Autobahn nowadays has more often than not, will get him into trouble - if caught, which luckily id highly unlikely. In part due to little control and due to the fact that enforcment is mostly by photo. However if caught, 40kmh over limit = loose license for a month + ?150 + 2points, 60over loosse license 3 month + ... - you get the grip :)
