This year I'll be a freshman in college. For the first semester, I'm lined up to stay with my parents. That way, I can help take my sister home from school until she gets her license. I'll have a job after class. Many people have told me that part of the college experience is living away from home, and now I really want to. What should I do? On campus? Apartment with a friend? Throw me some tips to this if you have any...I'm open to suggestions...

depends on the school, and which dorm you'd be in. At Rice, I live in a nice college so I will stay on campus for the whole 4 years (starting junior year soon).

Some schools have terrible dorms and you'd be better off living away from campus.

Living away from home is key, though. Don't feel bad about staying there one semester to help out with our sister, but don't stay there for the next semester, too.

I'd recommend the dorms if that's still possible. I made many life-long friendships with the people I met.

Ahh!! I wish I had applied for housing, but my plan really early was to stay at home my first year. Problem is, once I went to orientation and figured out that everyone I knew was staying on campus, those plans changed...now housing is filled up...

UTC has really bad dorms...well, not really bad, but they're not nice...The college is almost right on the river...Right across the river is North Chattanooga, a really nice section of town. There are some nice apartments ~10 minutes biking from school for $600ish /month...

With apartments, how much should I expect for utilities? I really need access to the internet, so either Comcast or Sprint...

College is the time to sow your seeds. Break that off or you'll regret it.

As long as your college has dorms that aren't completely horrible, you should live in dorms your first couple of years to help establish new friends and meet new people.

I would love to live in the dorms...I have many friends there, but only the expensive ones that always get broken into are still available...and by expensive, I mean $2000+/semester

It depends

Someone said to live on campus because that's where the girls are. Well, apartment life makes you look more mature to the women folk and you'll have a private bedroom to return to if you get lucky. Very convenient :p

Yes, technically dorm life is part of the college experience, and it can be a lot of fun. That's part of being a kid though. When you move into an apartment, you're ready to become an adult (you need to manage the bills, deal with management and broken stuff, decorate and furnish it yourself, etc). I will never move back into the dorm. If I had enough money to eat out every night, I'd consider it, but unfortunately one oven/stove between 400 people is not my idea of convenience. I'm much happier with my own kitchen, my own bedroom, and much more living space. But yes, the cramped dorm lifestyle is part of the experience, so live there for a year if you badly want to.

Live in the dorms. I can't stress that enough. Living off campus will not do anything for you.

High school relationships rarely last through college, and for those that kept them going I feel sorry for.

That's at the dorms that are filled...the new ones that get robbed really easy and all the time are $6000+

EDIT: Oh, it's $6000 year...that's better...still, they're bad..

Live on campus 1 year and don't take any classes. After you are done with that move back and go to school full time.

I can't fathom going to college and not spending at least one full year in a dorm. Back when I went to college, I spent my first year in the dorm and it was one of the best experiences of my life. You will meet a ton of new people, make long-lasting friendships and experience far less of the hassles that come with apartment life. Living in a dorm is a huge part of the college experience and one you don't want to miss out on.

Spend a semester or two in the dorm before taking on the added responsibilities and isolation of apartment life. You'll thank yourself later.
