wahaha is a good brand of bottled water. i have to disagree with the previous poster that said to avoid street vendor food. that is the real authentic chinese food... 2x better than most restaurants there and 10x better than anything you'll get here. sorry, but claims that you're going to get som e horrible disease from eating street vendor food is just paranoia. those people eat it every day and they're still around aren't they? i mean lets get real, they have a big ass wok sitting on a hot gas flame, it's not like they're giving you raw fish or meat. i spent a month eating that food and was just fine, i can't imagine going to china and missing out on that (i seriously think it's one of the best parts of visiting china).

Is that food pretty cheap in price also?

yes street vendor food is pretty cheap (mcdonalds prices are not that different from here, and frankly it tastes a little weird... if you have to eat fast food though, kfc and mcdonalds both have really good spicy chicken sandwiches there). you can get a box of noodles for 2 yuan, which is like 25 cents here.

umm the street vendors that wash like 100 dishes in the same bucket of water looks pretty unsanitory to me. you really have to be careful. some of them might be clean but some of them aren't.

hepatitis is a big problem in china, and street food has a lot to do with it.

anyway the food tastes great but you just need to be careful and choose the good ones.

have you been there?

because none of the street vendors i went to actually gave me anything that would have needed to be washed or whatnot... everything was either on a stick, in a plastic bag, in a styrofoam container, or they just put it your hand. don't buy anything where you eat from a reusable container (if you see such a place) and you will be fine. seriously, you are missing out if you eat from anywhere other than street vendors.

i grew up there... but i guess times have changed and non-reusable containers are much more popular now... sorry my bad. haven't been there in 8-9 years.

anyway i agree the food is great. i used to eat it all the time too, but with containers brought from home.

going back to visit next year 🙂

cool, where did you grow up? maybe the container thing is locale-specific... i can imagine it woudl be done in a tighter community... most the places i went to were too busy to make reusable containers a good idea. most of the street food i had was from xi an.

i'm thikning about going back too 🙂 probably in the winter... hit up taiwan too to visit my grandfather.

oh yea, and rufio, if you're under 21 this is your big chance to get booze 😛

zhengjiang, it's a city near nanjing in the jiang su province. you might have seen the vinegar heh... anyway when i was there, only the bigger places sold food in disposable containers. the really popular, small vendors had ceramic containers.

hah, don't waste your time shopping. counting the cost per hour of being there thanks to expensive plane ticket and all expenses, there are not hot deals😛 go look at sh*t.

hmmm well i've definitely heard of nanjing and jiang su. probably from some ancient war story my parents told me 😛

yea i have to agree... the really cheap stuff has a pretty high failure rate. it's not really worth it imo. just get a few things that you think are cool... like a scroll or something 🙂

Be prepared to get hit by tens of hookers on the streets in the bigger cities (not a joke)
Don't buy the knock off North face backpacks. They break after a few weeks. Knockoff clothes are of better quality. Cheap software and console games if you don't mind supporting pirates. I wouldn't buy electronics unless you could somehow pass as a local.

beer and soda, no water.
the north face backpack i got lasted me a couple years.
say no to the massage girls, unless that's your thing...

heheh yeah it's not a really big city. it's in the east by that big river

The Chinese call their method of writing Mandarin in western characters, Pin Yin. I'm not sure of the correct Pin Yin spelling on this phrase, but learn it well.

Bu yao wei xing pronounced, boo yow way jing. It means, "Don't use MSG." 🙂

Well, i am a big Chinese dude.

I want to get cheap crap -- i intend to buy some fake imitation designer stuff for me and my woman.

i will get electronics and stuff too. and maybe some fake dvd's and crap like that.

i was in taiwan for 6 months, and i always ate the street vendor food, so i nkow i can handle that stuff.

should i buy a money belt or something like that?

also, i got this killer deal.....................Rossman would be jealous:

airfare, tour, hotel, food, transportation...ALL PAID for...........and it only costs.......$599.99!!!! 😱 😱 😱

That's cool. I'm actually posting from the Korean airport now. I'm coming back from a 3 week trip to Hong Kong which was a blast. I'll have pics up tomorrow or whenever the hell I get back. The flight sucks, I've been up for over a day straight already, and I got a 13 hour flight to look forward to here in another 3 hours. Do not eat salads there, it is the same as the water i guess.

It was great, but damn im glad to be coming back. Way too crowded for me. McDonalds will be your friend. Ttrying different foods was great for a week or so, but after that I found myseld ordering big macs all of the time. DOn't worry about SARS or anything, the big thing now seems to be dengue fever. Christ im ready to get back in the US, lol. Sorry if this doesn't make any sense, I can barely think right now. 🙂

Oh yeah, bring toilet paper. It is hard as hell to find.

God i hope these people are careful with my luggage. i bought some snake testes wine there and i want it to make it back without busting all in my bag. cant remember everything but it supposedly contains snake and dog testes and penes lol.
