I'm going to be on a 13 hour flight.

The first 8 or 9 hours isn't too painful. It's the last 3 or 4 that will kill you and make you want to physically claw your way out of the metal tube they call an airplane.

I flew from SLC to CDG and SLC to ZRH this year. Total time is about 9 to 10 hours of flying time with 1 lay over somewhere in the States.

If you're flying east, I would just try to sleep as you usually land sometime in the morning local time. Get a prescription of Ambien. If flying west, try to stay away, or only sleep on the first part of your flight as you generally land in the afternoon or evening.

What I did was sleep, watch a movie or two, played my PSP.

1 thing you have gotta do, eat some taco bell about 5 to 6 hours before getting on the plane then some pickled eggs, and some sauerkraut. Then drink like 3 draft pilsners...

Make sure the john has paper!

pfft how could i leave out our charming 50th state?

i was thinking guam 😱

edit: NYC is 11 hours
miami doesn't seem to have non-stop
atlanta is 10 hours
boston doesn't seem to have non-stop
charlotte doesn't seem to have non-stop (they're US Airways' hub, right?)
the d doesn't seem to have non-stop

Get a first class ticket. It's worth every penny on those 13 hour flights. You'll just sit there and eat all of the great food they give you and drink all of the liquor.

Why is drinking alcohol on a plane worse for you than drinking alcohol in a bar, ElFenix? To my knowledge, most airlines have stopped serving free alcohol in coach because it's a first class priviledge.

I recommend just bringing spare batteries for that PSP.

Excuse me, may I have a few butter pats?"

alcohol's effects are intensified at altitude. so that means you get drunker, faster. it also dries you out more, and what with the already low humidity on the airplane you could be uncomfortable. of course, you'll probably be so drunk you won't notice.

getting rid of the free alcohol was a cost cutting/revenue producing move, plus it probably cuts down on passenger belligerence.

I spent most of the nine hours I spent on a plane watching movies, listening to music, reading, and napping. Just look at it as a long day at work.

I read some ebooks on my laptop last time I flew from Kazakhstan back to the US. I had a 6 hour flight from Alma-Ata to Amsterdam first, then a 5 hour layover, then a 12 hour flight back to LAX. I slept most of the first flight as I left at 2AM local time. I got through the layover and maybe half of the second flight reading ebooks before my battery ran down. I tried to sleep through the rest of the flight, but I had a bad cold/flu and kept getting dehydrated.

I've been told you can get prescription sleeping pills from your doctor for exactly this situation. You take them, sleep for 12 hours, and then you wake up completely refreshed. If I am in coach class with screaming kids around me, I would rather sleep than try to read or intermittently sleep.

They usually have televisions for you to watch. If not, bring a book, get freaking wasted on free booze and pass out for a few hours, or write a novel. Either way it will suck.

where do you get free booze?

Damn! GENIUS idea!

I just wish I hadn't spent all that time watching every episode of 24 (from season 1:1 to 5:24). 😛 That's one helluva time killer, that's for sure.

put some pr0n on ur PSP and hit it up in the bathroom when most people are asleep 🙂 just make sure u dont get it everywhere, lol...

maybe get a new PSP game and dont play until u get on the plane? make sure u bring a power adapter if ur seat has power, if not bring lots of batteries or get a new seat...
sleeping pills would help
magazines (nudy or not)
books (if u read...i dont)
bring ur work/homework with u
put lots of movies on ur puter...i wouldnt play DVDs if u dont have a power adapter...it will take up mouch more battery life
maybe take some eBook learning materials and learn something like networking, secutiy, linux, or whatev

endless possibilties

I stayed up all 13 hours when I flew from Hong Kong to San Francisco and could barely keep my eyes open when I landed.

Next time I'm going to try the not sleeping the night before the flight thing. Anyone tried that yet? My co-worker said that works. Or I just need some prescription drug. I tried the free booze thing and all it did was make me more uncomfortable after 6 glasses of wine.

Do they honestly give you free booze? Even in Coach?
