If you listen to anyone, for your own benefit listen to me. 
I'm a Ski Instructor (certified by the CSIA) and I teach on a daily basis. I'll tell you this:
If you?re only going to go out 1-3 times a season you should ski. I'm not saying that because I'm a ski instructor, but the learning curve for snowboarding is a lot bigger and if you only go out a few times, you will not be good enough to relax and have fun doing it.
With skiing, going out for your first time, taking a 2 hour lesson, skiing all day on moderate terrain, and not falling once, isn't unheard of. The risk of injury (if you care at all) is a lot lower. And you'll actually be able to ski on the same runs as your more experienced friends.
With that being said, if you plan on going out 10 or more times a season, and you?d think snowboarding is your thing, then snowboard.
And no matter what you choose, TAKE A LESSON!
