Konichiwa -- Did your watch stop? I posted that about an hour and a half ago. If I read the thread correctly, the edit happend just after Red posted his last comment. He, and several others, also posted their own comments about the title much earlier.

Got shrimp??? :)

<< The topic is fine .. geesh, how politically correct does one need to be these days? >>

I agree with this person, although I may be one of the few, apparently. A person is a person, as i see it, skin color, religion, any of the above has zero effect on my decisions during the day, or in the world.

I wish everyone thought the way I did. Does singling out Jewish people because they cannot eat pork make me a bad person? If i had a religion that prevented me from doing something that had absolutely zero effect on any actual matter, this topic would not bother me in the slightest. Say my religion said i could not drive a white car. Then someone made a post that said "I'd hate to be a <Seph>." Then when you got in, it said "I love my white sports car." Well, I'm happy with my red sports car. If it was another stereotype, such as "I'm glad I am not a woman, because I couldn't get as good of a job as i have," something that is very true in society, (women get paid a dollar less on average than a man, and it is sickening) but still completely offensive, I would understand these flames. Either way, how did we ever get to the holocaust? How did we get to the stereotype of jewish people being cheap? These things had absolutely nothing to do with my post, whatsoever. And you see, it bothers me that these things were brought up in the first place. What difference does it make in the "I like ham and Jewish people cannot eat it, therefore i am glad I am not Jewish" argument? How about this analogy: "I like cable TV, I am glad i can afford it."

You see, bias is being upheld by these actions. You see, probably 15 people that thought i was a perfectly normal person now dislike me because I made a comment that, to the everyday person, was amusing and not degrading. But there are always the people that take things too seriously and make me out to be a racist/bad guy/immoral person. Do you think that if people did not take things as seriously, racism would not be as big of a problem? I've been called things before. A black girl in my 7th hour class Freshman year called me her "Number One Cracker." Did I take offense? Why would I? I thought absolutely nothing of it, so little, in fact, that i am surprised I can even remember it for that statement.

Does the fact that you are unable to eat pork by your religion make you less of a person? Does it affect you in any way whatsoever in the business world? In the social world, a simple joke such as this should not have any effect on someone, either.

Perhaps it's my enviroment. My parents have probably 10 jewish friends, most of which are highly educated and over half love to tell jokes. One came in and told this joke the other day -- "How many Jew(ish person)'s can you fit in a Mercede's Benz? 15, 5 in the seats and 10 in the ash tray."

Now THAT is an offensive joke. I took offense to that, but the Jewish guy and my parents laughed like there was no tomorrow. I didn't understand how it was funny. Could it be that they are even less politically sensitive than I am? Probably. With jokes like this being told by Jewish Doctors, a person would think that a ham joke was not out of line in any manner.

I'm speaking my mind -- If i am pissing anyone off, i apologize, but I am trying to understand how you are processing the things I said. I do not understand because I apparently thought that religion and racial prejudice were not still in most people - they aren't in me, but I find it sad that there are this many.

zippy-the jew/cheap-greedy, whatever association comes from a bit earlier. Way back in the day, christian law was interpretad to not allow charging interest. Soo, all money lenders/loan sharks were Jews. Read the Merchant of Venice.

And what's wrong with the noun Jew? I can understand it being somewhat offensive in a verb form.

Seph, I'm glad I'm not from AZ, what was up with that Barry Goldwater crap?(yes, I know I'm stretching, but who cares?)

And the next time you see the Swedish Chef, remember, you shouldn't laugh, I might be offended.

I understand your feelings, Red. However, your imaginary post had zero point behind it. I thought that because mine wanted to create a "pork" thread, it had a little more substance :)

About the phantom surfer lurking, there is nothing that truly can be done about that. There are many misleading titles out there, and some of them are based on a possible offensive title with a clean body. Again, however, I understand where you are coming from, although i cannot agree.

Simply put, I felt the lack of the right to eat pork is not a topic that could not be truly taken offensively. With your analogy, it wasnt simply a title that was there to catch attention for a thread that was actully truly about pork or another obsurd topic, but rather it had zero meaning inside. Simply put, it was a nef thread posted by someone that has no understanding of where to draw the line.

Truly, Red, did you find the post offensive? I wouldn't attempt to say anything that would piss people off, but I still believe that most were a little too uptight about this. My was about a PERSONAL life preference, yours was a complete nef thread that crossed the line.

<< Maybe someone who was lurking for the first time and the first thing that they see is that title. They would leave with a wrong impression about this forum and you. >>

And you're, what, Red, the welcoming committe chairman? ;)

Seph

I think that the reason some people found it offensive was because they saw the title and made their judgement solely on that, without even reading the post.

One of my close friends is Jewish. I am gonna send him a link to this thread. He's pretty funny. He follows some of the rules, but he does what he wants otherwise. He's got tattoos (which apparently are a bad thing) and eats whatever he wants. But, he'll only date Jewish girls. He's given me lots of good information that has helped me (Irish Catholic) understand his culture a litte more.

A guy I work with is a Muslim and we have discussions about various issues and I find his point of view to be quite enlightening.

and I don't eat shell fish because of their origin and way of life...it's pretty nasty, walkin around on the sea floor and getting crapped on by all the other fish!

Zippy, for some reason that really cracked me up.

<< Not myself now. I'm just presenting a different point of view. You wanted to have a open discussion about this didn't you? >>

Of course I do :) I just want people to make well thought out arguments, rather than blatently flaming me. :p

<< I think that the reason some people found it offensive was because they saw the title and made their judgement solely on that, without even reading the post. >>

Seph:

Most of us who have read your posts know you aren't an anti-semite. These posts are casual ramblings (with the exception of one or two people who prepare elaborate posts) but are scrutinized like Supreme Court papers.

Yeah, I too love ham sandwiches.

This is OT, OFF TOPIC. I.e., almost anything is game.

You post, the moderator deletes. :p

By the way, what is "hardware". :p
