the topic was a bit of a risk, but I found the post pretty funny. Farbio is right, jews love a good jewish joke, especially because they all seem to be accurate to an extent.

Jewish meat and deli are available easily enough, though I believe they cost extra.

"Marge, are we Jewish?"
"no"
"good (picks up plate containing a pig with apple in mouth)" hahahaha.

What exactly does pork/ham/etc taste like anyways? Maybe I could be non-jewish for, oh, 5 minutes...;)

Sure, of course it was meant to be a little provocative. Otherwise no one would read it. After all, we all resemble a bunch of ex-talk show hosts and National Enquirer columnists, right? ;)

<< I would hate to be a jew. >>

Seph, screw you. I know it's a joke, but it's not funny. I am sure you wouldn't like it if I said that I would hate to be a <insert your religion here>.

I don't know why the term "jew" has gotten a negative connotation. Especially a connotation with being cheap. Hey if your parents/grandparents/great grandparents were immigrants during the depression/during WW2/not long after WW2 and were coming to America with literally nothing but the clothes on their back and MAYBE one suit case, they would be thrifty too! They didn't have the luxury to spend more money than absolutely necessary. Old habits die hard, that is why the lil old Jewish people down in Florida are still thrifty. :p

I am very sensitive on this topic because I lost 20+ relatives (it depends how far out you want to go on the family tree...) in the Holocaust and my dad was born in a Displaced Persons camp about a year after the war.

Another reason I am sensitive to this is the obvious, I AM JEWISH! :p

If you have any questions about Judaism (seems like the laws of kashrut (kosher) are the most popular), feel free to PM me and I'll answer your questions if I can. BTW, I am a conservative Jew and I don't keep kosher, but I have actually never had pork or anything like that. I also don't mix milk and meat at the same meal, I just don't do it for some reason.

<< trp,
now, some hot dogs and salami are considered kosher - any all beef hot dog or salami would be considered loosely kosher. a meat isn't truly kosher unless it was butchered by a kosher butcher. now there aren't very many kosher butchers around, nor are they exactly cheap, so for this reason, most jews are not completely kosher, but instead follow the don't eat pork or mix milk and meat rules
>>

Not true. Not ANY all beef hot dog or salami is loosely kosher at all! Meat is kosher if it was butchered in a certain fashion by a kosher butcher. Kosher meat is expensive and a lot of Jews are not kosher, however many still are. The don't eat pork or mix milk and meat thing does not constitue being kosher...or even loosely kosher.

Being kosher is an all or nothing deal, kinda like being pregnant. You aren't sorta pregnant. ;)

By the way, there is something called glot kosher, which is an extreme version of kosher for the Hassidic Jews or Orthodox Jews. The only difference is who the butcher is certified by (which/what kind of Rabbi).

Zippy,

As my earlier posts should have made clear, I too am Jewish. I also lost relatives in the holocaust-I don't know the exact number, but basically my grandparents both lost their entire families. I feel very strongly about the holocaust, and consider it of utmost importance to my judaism.

That being said, I'm not sure your reaction to the thread topic was warranted. I was shocked when I saw the thread listed, but when I checked it out it seemed like any other jewish joke. I thought it was pretty funny, even though the topic was rather insensative.

I admire anyone who stands up for what they believe in, but I think that the "screw you" remark went a bit too far. just my $0.02

konichiwa, you are Jewish too?

Cool, I didn't know that. I thought you told me awhile back that you were of Asian descent?

Yes, we are generally frugal, but the elderly Jews are really the ones who more often than not cheap. :) One of my grandmothers is loaded and she gets her shoes at Ames. :p She was born and raised in Poland and survived the Holocaust. My mother's parents were born and raised in NJ and are not cheap actually. In fact, my maternal grandmother's bday is today. :) She thoroughly enjoys shopping, so does my aunt.

somethingwitty, I don't care if he was joking or not. I am "friends" with seph, we talk on ICQ sometimes, but I am not gonna slack off on him just because of that.

LOL koni, that could be it too. :p

BTW, maybe a more sensitive way for Seph to have made the title would have been one of the following:

"It would be hard to be a Jew..."
"Being a Jew would be tough with no pork!"
etc.

He said it in such a harsh way that I couldn't give a rats ass if he was joking or not.

Hate is a strong word with a negative connotation, it is not easily made up for.

zippy:

ok, I'll grant that the topic should have been something more like "it's times like these I'm glad I'm not Jewish", or something not involving the word "hate". Defense of seph withdrawn ;)

Just cus you are born a Jew, doesn't mean you are allergic to pork or anything. You can still eat pork, unless you are really religious. I personally try not to eat pork, even though I am practically an atheist. But I often make exceptions for bacon and ham. Less often for porkchops. :)

Oh, come on. That's so sugar-coated; I can just see Lamar Burton from Reading Rainbow saying something like that. Being a Jew would sure be tough without the other white meat!!! <Huge f*cking grin> :disgust: <-- linkie link.

koni, I know, I didn't put much creative effort into my two suggestions, and it looks like somethingwitty didn't either. ;) hehe

Seph -- First, I suggest that you change that title. It is blatantly offensive.

That said, even though I am an atheist, I am from a Jewish family. I guess that makes me a Jewish atheist -- Jewish by culture and heritage and atheist by belief. Unless you keep kosher, you can eat anything you want. If you want to feel sorry for those who do keep kosher, feel worse because shell fish are also forbidden. Man, I love good shrimp, lobster and crab.

You also can't mix meat and dairy, so there goes a lot of other good dishes, which would certainly kill most of my favorite pizza combinations. :)

zippy,

you have witnessed the extent of my creative talents. Sadly, I lack the creativity to make it big in hollywood, like the rest of the Jews in the world. And I was so looking forward to controlling the media. ;)

Oh, I don't eat shell fish any more either. Geez, I follow 3 kosher laws inadvertantly. :) I just don't eat pig products for some reason, I don't eat milk and meat for some reason (taste? I dunno...), and I don't eat shell fish because of their origin and way of life...it's pretty nasty, walkin around on the sea floor and getting crapped on by all the other fish! ;disgust:

Just got an ICQ from Koni telling me to check out this thread. I'm glad i did.

First of all, the holocaust disgusts me. I have immense feelings of compassion toward all jewish people, due to the struggle and family problems it has created.

Second of all, Koni knows the reason i posted the title the way i did. When you saw it in the list, did you feel a undenyable urge to click it? Yes. If i would have entitled this thread "I like ham sandwiches" it would have not been interesting, and an interesting thread is a good thread, or so i think...

I have many many jewish friends, and I have zero feeling of superiority or a ill-will toward them in any manner whatsoever. I even took the time to ask a jewish person if the thread would be offensive before i had posted it. He said it would not to him.

Now, if i would have left no explanation inside, or actully put down traits of Jewish people, I could understand the flames. But as it is, it is the same as a a muslim saying "I would hate to be a Christian. --> One wife." It was meaningless. To a Christian it is correct to have one wife. To a Muslim it is fine to have several. Saying that you couldn't adjust should not be a problem.

Did anyone ever see that Seinfeld episode where George cooked scrambled eggs for breakfast and add lobster to it? He gave it to Jerry's girlfriend (Jewish) to get even with her because she saw him naked. Great episode. ;)

The topic is fine .. geesh, how politically correct does one need to be these days? Although I must say, the jews being cheap thing is a stereotype just like any other.

Bad News: Your catchy title was edited.

Good News: "(Title edited by AnandTech Moderator)" is still pretty catchy.
