Well, the oral surgeon asked me whether I want to be put to sleep during the surgery. Anyone have any experience undergoing the surgery while awake? What do you recommend? The surgery takes an average of 2-3 hours.
I've never been put to sleep before so I'm a bit worried about what might happend...

Hearing them drill into your head, and watchng them take a chisel to your teeth doesn't make for the best memories...

get put under, it's dreamless cool. 10..9..8..7.. zzzzzzzzzzzz

by your recollection things will go black, then you'll hear "wake up, it's over" almost instantly.

worse that can happen is you'll throw up coming out of it.... or get molested while your under. But is that really a bad thing?!

Earphones are your friend.

When the sound is being emitted from inside your cranial cavity - ear phones don't make much of a difference (well, unless you can get the doctor to drill to the beat).

I didn't get a choice and was put to sleep. I'm with rbloedow on this one. I don't think I could take the audio or visual that would come with staying awake.

Edit: I would probably eventually go crazy if left awake and end up attacking the guy doing the surgery. "Hey that's mine....PUT IT BACK!! Hey when did they electric chester cat get here?"

i would say don't go to sleep. I got 3 pulled in one sitting. It wasn't the most pleasant of expiriences : but honestly i dont remember much from it, probally just the normal pressure.

my biggest motivations for not being put to sleep
1) It costs more. For me, i would have had to go to a different dentist place, out of insurance, yadayada some other complicated stuff and it would have cost near 300 dollars
2) the most painful part is after the anesthetic wears off. The actual operation (for most people anyways) isn't what is painful. It's once all that crap has left your body that the pain sets in. .but then you start popping pills and everything is better.

i wouldn't sleep unless they recommend it. I would just stay awake, and think happy thoughts.

Well, its going to cost me ~$225 without being put to sleep and ~$300 for being put to sleep (stupid 20% co-pay :| :|). Yeah, my left wisdom tooth is completely under my gum so its going to be more serious than just pulling my teeth out.
My biggest fear is since I haven't been put to sleep yet, I don't know how my body reacts to it.

I really don't want to have the surgery done now, but my wisdom teeth are displacing the rest of my teeth and if I leave them alone I'm going to have teeth jutting out of my gum sideways :(.. that and its starting to hurt a little.

Let them put you to sleep. The mask goes on, you count down from 10, and next thing you know they are waking you up. That is the only way to go.

I got all four out on Saturday afternoon. Went to work this morning. I was put to sleep. Oh, getting put to sleep is fun, your body just casually goes numb. Awesome. Also, I was in a "drunk" stage when I woke up. For me that means talking a lot and loudly, and being generally hyper...

Damn... the doctor said I'd need to be out for a minimum of a week coz of all the pain killers I'd be popping. And these are only 2 of my wisdom teeth (I had the top two pulled out last year)

Same here, except my older brother and I had both of our teeth (4 for each) removed simultaneously. The "drunk" stage for me was pinballing down the hall shouting (in my mind) for my mom (probably sounded more like "Mhuuaahhmmm"). I couldn't walk straight for a little while :D.

How many are you getting removed? And are they impacted? I had my two lower impacted wisdom teeth removed in about 45 minutes by a surgeon and was wide awake with local anesthetic. The only thing you'll feel is a little pressure.

haha you have no idea how funny this is.. I was worried about being molested when I went under to have my wisdom teeth removed (thanks to Seinfeld)

When I woke up (still groggy), I looked the Dentist straight in the eyes and told him that if my zipper is down, I will kick his "mother fvcking ass you fvcking f@g" My wife and the nurse started dying laughing.. Apparently he didnt think it was so funny. When I had to come back to be "rechecked" he was less than gentle.

haha

I was put under...

I'm glad too b/c the doc had to cut through my gums to get to the teeth--they hadn't come out yet, but for some reason the dentist/surgeon felt that it was imperative that they be removed.

don't use general anesthesia, use local. unless you are a scaredy cat, you can handle just having novacaine (lidocaine).

i just had mine done today... they only partially put me under... i was still conscious, but i didn't really know/care what was happening... i was in and out in less than an hour. they started me off with some nitrous, then shot me up and i just kinda daydreamed, and then i was done. the part that sucks is that your jaw will be numb all day, but other than that, you get some vicodin (and 600mg ibuprofen, in my case) to take care of any pain. I would suggest being put to sleep, depending on how much they give you, you'll either be half-conscious, or fully out, and all you'll remember will be them telling you that you'll start to feel a little sleepy and then you'll wake up in another room.

i just don't like the idea of being fully conscious when they literally yank your teeth out and then stitch up the holes.

good luck, and enjoy the vicodin afterwards
