After about 10 or so mins of playing online games (UT2K3, War3, Bond..........ect.) im getting disconnected. i have road runner broadband and am also using a linksys router. i have the router configured to allow connections at certain ports for War3 and such but i encounter the same problems. With ut2k3 and bond, after i am disconnected return to the desktop i find that my connection is all together gone forcing me to restart. with war3 i get disconnected from games but am still connected to bnet and can browse online just fine. I contacted my ISP and they said my signal is strong and it must be a problem in my box, "try getting a new NIC card" they said. i have tried bypassing the router and directly connecting to the cable modem and still experience the same things.

this is really frustrating me cuz i cant figure this out. i did run traceroutes to battle.net and for the most part displayed good ping, but about every once and a while i experienced very high ping. anyway, if anyone can help me out or suggest something please do so..........i will try ANYTHING!!!

Thanks guys

I used to have DSL before I got my cable connection and I had the exact same problem. After hours on the phone with Level-3 techs (useless IMHO) I came to the conclusion that its not on the customer side, its on the ISP side. Here's my theory:

The ISP uses some type of NAT/filtering (eventhough they will swear they don't, I think they are BSing) on all customer connections for whatever purpose. Once in a while, the NAT/filter screws up and drops a packet or 2 or even drops the whole damn connection (over taxed NAT router or filter box?) The customer calls the ISP tech support and they go on a witch hunt to "troubleshoot" the "problem" on the customer's box. I think its all BS and all on the ISP side, but that's just my theory, I could be wrong.

SO basically, don't kill yourself trying to fix the problem, it may be unfixable without switching ISPs.

Just for kicks, I would try a new NIC. I've seen quite a bit and have only seen a couple of NICs go back, but when they do, it ususally is something flaky at first and then it completely stops working. It's easy and cheap to try.

I assume that you have no issues while playing the games solo and your machine has no other issues. XP with our with SP1? Just something else to look at. What slot is your NIC in? If it is in PCI slot 5, move it to a different slot and see if that helps. If memory serves me correct, slot 5 generally shares an IRQ with the AGP slot. Forgive me if you do not have 5 PCI slots, but I'm not familiar with your motherboard. That's about the only thing other than the NIC idea that I have...unless you've really tweaked some BIOS settings...try running at the defaults if you have, just for grins.
