I'm finally contempalting getting rid of my computer and buying a lappy.

I don't know what to say.......upgrade after upgrade etc has jsut ruined it for me...god know I want to play the latest halflife episode in 1080p on my tv, but I just can't jsutify it anymore....

+ a lappy + EV-DO is sooooo tempting....

Since about all I do these days is surfing and basic office apps., I've pretty much migrated to using a laptop all the time.
When I first set up my field office, I brought my laptop just to get started, then I would pack it up and take it to my apartment with me at night to surf.
Ended up with one at the office and one at the apartment.
Still have my desktop at home, but I am seriously considering getting rid of it and just hook up another laptop in the living room. Save all that desk space. (Custom built my own desk and it is HUGE!)

Meh, i love my two screens, i rly couldn'y imagine trying to multi-task without them... then there's gaming...and not having to peer a small screen with a daftly high resolution that nothing short of a gfx card costing more than a decent lappy can drive...

My lappy gathers dust these days...

I have a desktop and a laptop. I find a desktop's keyboard and monitor are more comfortable to use.

I pretty much always have a laptop with me but when I am home it stays in its bag and I use the desktop.

A laptop for work is ok as long as I can hook up a regular keyboard/mouse, I hate all the laptop mouse substitutes and tiny flat keyboards. For me at home desktops are the only way to go even now that I have sort of jumped off the endless upgrade treadmill. I love being able to open them up and make changes whenever the mood strikes me.

Make the progression to SFF first.

It's easy to max out a system in the original build and it will be current for at least a year and a half.

I'd rather have both. My desktop is decent for gaming, my laptop is good for work. The laptop is nice for traveling or writing papers from my chair while I watch TV.

I bought an off-lease Thinkpad and it's great, because it's awesome at business stuff (word/excel/matlab/etc) and surfing the internet, but it won't really play games. This is good, because it's one less distraction at work.

A laptop makes a good second computer, but I tried to live w/o my desktop for a year and I missed it. A docking station is a partial solution, but you'll still miss games and such.

I traded my desktop (A64 3000+, 1GB, 9800 Pro) for an eMachines m6805 (A64 3000+, 1.25GB, 9600).
It was great for awhile. But since I want to game well (for the rare occasions during the non-summer months when I have the time), I started to miss my desktop about a year later.

i've slowly gone from monster machine to portable comp. thread

i don't regret ever going to a notebook. in fact, i'm sorry i didn't make the switch earlier. for my gaming fix, i've got my xbox 360 and gamefly subscription.

I felt the same recently. I had a nice desktop setup. I stopped playing games, then I moved and didn't configure my desktop for a while. My laptop has been great for me. I have a small one (Dell 710m) so it's great.

I still have a desktop for all the desktop tasks and heavy storage space that you get with a desktop. However, I'm also contemplating just saving up some money, moving the three hard drives into an enclosure, and buying a nice newer Lenovo Thinkpad with Firewire or USB 2. I could really use the space, and as long as my laptop plays Starcraft or Planetside I'm sitting pretty.

I use my laptop for everything... I like to move around in my house and always have access to everything I need on my laptop...
