Just bought GTA 3....2 weeks ago I bought Morrowind. WTF is the deal with poor performance in these new games! Ive spent $115 of my hard earned cash on games and nearly $1000 on my PC and I cant even enjoy a game? Ive been told its the copy protection in the software thats causing performnce to be $h!ty.........screw that. I wont buy another pc game until something is done! Choppy game play and sluggish performance.......it is WAY more enjoyable to game on my gamecube... and its about $900 cheaper!

Im tired of spending hours on forums looking for performance tweaks and bug fixes.......

Sorry....I just had to rant and my wife wont listen :)

I've seen Morrowind and just getting the no-cd crack helps a good bit. It's sad how these companies have to sacrifice performance to try to actually get paid for their work, it's even more sad that it doesn't do a damn thing.

I can't speak for GTA3 as I won't be buying it, Ive been playing it with no performance problems on PS2 for months now =)

That's one thing I love about consoles. Just put the game in, and go. No new drivers to install, no performance tweaks to get it to run, not messing with settings. Don't get me wrong, I love PC games, and I play mostly PC games, but sometimes I just love the simplicity of a console game. Nothing to worry about, just jump right in and play.

While I agree PC gaming is not often not user friendly the variety of games available is astounding. Plus the PC excels at certain types of games and leaves consoles in the dust (at least until they become real PCs).

The Morrowind+safedisc=slow performance is very lame. You shouldn't have to circumvent the protection for decent performance. I've seen many game patches that nuke the protection because it was causing problems. Hopefully the MW folks will do that eventually.

At this stage it looks like Morrowmind's problems stem from a heavy dependancy on CPU power which could be caused by poor programming.

Yeah, but that's the fun part. :)

Anyhow, from a pure gaming point of view I can see you point. Morrowind's easily playable on high settings on my systems, but when you step off the boat in the beginning it chops pretty hard.

I don't have any problems running morrowind at 1024x768 with my GF3 Ti200 clocked at 230/530. I did however D/L the No CD crack off one of the crack sites. Without the crack the game was pretty sluggish.

I really don't see the point in putting all these supposed anti-piracy things on games. Wasn't the NO-CD crack available before the game even came out. What's the point?!

I agree with the last thing you said for sure. I mean, it's kinda silly that the manufacturer of these games offer the "crack" to disable the copy protection. I mean, WTF IS the point?

yea,

I still love PC gaming....

I just get fed up with all the BS sometimes. For $50 frikin bucks there shouldent be any headaches. I think I like the bargain bin idea.....instead of buying games when they first come out.

The whole Morrowind BS is unaccepteble to me....I paid $65 for the collectors edition. For a game that was in development for 5years or more. I returned both Morrowind and GTA and I wont buy another new release game.

CrowDog, you may be entering the Time When You Force Yourself To Wait For The First/Second/Third Patch zone. It's a fun place with minimal problems because the games are always in top-shape when you buy. And often they're a few bucks cheaper.

I agree with that. The other thing that bothers me (although self-inflicted) is that I never really get my monies worth out of the games I buy because I constantly buy the new titles because I read how sick they all are. I have WAY more games than time to devote to them.

If you think GTA3 performs poorly on your system there has to be something wrong. You know that there is a fps cap in the game, right? It's activated by default and you have to turn it off to go above 30 fps. Nice, huh? ;) Also you should turn off the ghosting effect that's also on by default. I get between 30-50 fps in GTA3 (1024*768*32) most of the time (never goes below 25) so I think that's acceptable and my system is slower than yours as you can see in my sig.

what are you People complaining about ??? Every PC game that I have, including those mentioned above, I never have any problems playing them at High Res ...

All the time I hear people complaining about poor performance, but for some reason I never Experience them .. Maybe my PC is tweaked to handle them with no problem or something ...... Tweak your PC, and make sure you know what you are doing !!! Granted it takes a little longer to make Games run perfectly on your PC, but if you know what to do you should NEVER experience problems like yours .....

My specs:
AMD 1.2 266fsb
512 PC2100 crucial
GF2ULTRA elsa

IBM HD 36gig

The manufacturer doesn't put out cracks. The 'underground' does.

Gotta dissagre a bit with you there. I think it is sad that customers are supposed to pay for non-functional crap that many of the doesnt want in the first place and doesnt bring any benefit of ownership. Being able to run a game (or any other s/w for that matter) without the disc is something that I really want as it allows me to store the disc in a safe place after installation and thus protecting my investment.

If game companies gave a litte more money on the QA folks and lowered the prices a bit I think they would see more sales.

That's why I put "cracks" in parenthesis, EA has put out files to disable copy protection with SafeDics 2 several times. Emporer : Battle for Dune is the one that I bought that comes to mind. If I remember correctly not only did the main exe have cd-checks but the install file did as well. Something was screwy with it though and EA went ahead and put out a file to disable it.
