Maybe I'll get the Gazelle by Tony Little. That looks cool. 😉

Bike, treadmill and weights. You can also do stair stepper. I wouldn't do any one of these exclusively. I know that the stair stepper makes your a$$ huge. Well, very muscular. Bike is good but not enough. I like the treadmill but with a big incline.

My routine USED to be...
Treadmill for 15 minutes to warm up. Brisk walk
Circuit of weights just to tone.
Back on the treadmill for 30 minutes, heavy incline and quick pace.
Then right on the bike for 5 miles as fast as I could go, like a bat outta hell! The machine would be soaked with sweat.

I cut my weight slowly (Built some muscle) but inches fell off quickly.

Stepper or treadmill.
If you are really overweight the bike is going to be pretty hard for you and you are going to give up a lot more quickly. You would get more out of just going for walks.

anything with little impact on the knees/joints (exercise bike)

things like treadmills are good for your cardio, but if you can avoid the impact on your joints, do so.. i'd go exercise bike,.... i've biked for years, i swear by it.

Neither. Elliptical trainer works like both, only better.

BINGO!

He is correct and beat me to the punch. The Elliptical machine will give you a better workout then either of the ones you aked about and is also easy on joints and back. Do 30-60minutes everyday on it and you will have a good start to a workout routine.

If you can afford a machine, I'd look into getting a membership to the gym. A variety of machines such as ellipticals, stair steppers, and bikes will do you better than just one machine. I switch off between a treadmill and stationery bike.

Glad you chose the elliptical. The impact it has on your legs/glutes depends on how high you set the ramp settings and how much resistance you set it at. But it's great for cardio.

been using a "orbitrek" off and on past 2 1/2 years, its sort of a ellyptical training.

I like it because it is very easy on the knees and feet (low impact) and you can adjust the settings to your fitness level.
It sort of has a resisitance adjuster similar to a stationary bike.

I am sure there are a lot of newer and better devices but the older models might be cheaper and work using the same principle

good luck

and I agree once winter comes in some areas out door stuff is pretty much gone. it is currently 15 degrees outside

RUN

I Hate running. When I run, my thighs start to heat up, and I get this burning/itching sensation in my buttocks and my lower back. I do more scratching than running.

I refuse to run, unless I drop 30 lbs. 😉

Thanks for the great picture you've seared into my brain :|

Just keep in mind that if you're a little heavy, then any high-impact exercise will have a negative effect on your joints, especially your knees and back.. if you're out of shape.

So, I would just power-walk a lot, swim and get loosened up for about a month, then do a low impact aerobic program, then start the bike, stepper later.
