i trying to cut out junk food (not that i ate much of it before) from my habits and replacing it with nuts.

i'll have what i'm estimating to be 2-3 servings of almonds, walnuts, peanuts, raisins (basically trail mix) at work.
then come home and have another 2 servings of pistachios.

nuts are high in protein, fats and fiber (shitting a lot more now lol).
should i tone it down?

4-5 servings seems like a bit much, but I think it all depends on how well it fits in with the rest of your meals. I eat almonds as snacks, but I typically only eat 1-2 servings a day mixed with fruit. If you can, post what else you're eating throughout the day.

usually salad w/grilled chicken for lunch 3-4 times a week. sushi/sashimi once a week.
dinner is leftovers a lot of the times and varies too much.

weekend usually has a cheat day where i go out to eat and get a steak or burger or pizza.

i'm not exactly cutting, but i'm trying to lower body fat to reveal the abs (or is that considered cutting?).
but i'm still trying to build strength.

a serving of nuts is between 200-300 cals so 5 x 200-300 does seem like alot. They are far denser in calories than junk food.

I'm not sure what you are getting at here. Are you concerned that you may be eating too many total calories per day, or are you concerned about the amount of nuts you are eating?

If your concern is total calories - are you tracking everything you eat on Fitday and tracking your weight to see how things are changing over time?

If your concern is just the amount of nuts you are eating, I don't see any problem. It's a healthy food and certainly better than junk food. I don't see how you could eat "too many" of them, aside from the total calories issue.

calories aside, what about the fat, fiber?
just wanted to know if eating too much was detrimental at all.

but good point about the calories. i'll have to tone it down a bit i guess.

It's a matter of how it fits into your current diet. If it causes you to go over your calorie limit, then that's a problem. Nuts contain lots of (healthy) fats and if eating a lot of fat is coming at the cost of your protein/carb needs, then that is also bad. In general though, the extra fat and fiber from nuts is good for you, so as long as it isn't interfering with your other goals, snack away.

Nuts are good for you, but they also have a lot of calories. And its really easy to overeat nuts because they are fairly small, so they don't really fill you up instantly. I'd recommend you measure them out ahead of time, so you know exactly how much a "serving" really is (its suprisingly small). If you keep a bunch of little zip-loc bags full of nut servings, you can grab one and be in control and know you are only consuming your 200 calorie snack, and not inadvertantly making it a 400 calorie snack by eating too many.

Fat - 9 kcal/gram. Protein - 4 kcal/gram. Carbs - 4 kcal/gram. Alcohol 7 kcal/gram. That's what he means. Per gram, fats have far more calories than any other resource. Eating that many servings is most likely displacing some other form your nutrients that you probably should be getting. There is a such thing as too much fat, even if it's healthy. And btw, trying to see your abs IS cutting.

Nuts themselves are healthy. The fat found in nuts is healthy. The only real issue here is how they fit into your overall diet with respect to total calories.

A pound of nuts vs. a pound of lettuce. Which is more calorie dense? Get it?

My general train of thought is anything in large quantities is bad for you...with the exception of water...to a point (obviously you can over hydrate yourself with water as well).

Variety is the key to a good diet.

The basic issue here is grams of fat vs. grams of carbs and protein. A gram of fat has 9 calories, but a gram of carbs or protein only has 4 calories. Therefore, the more fat a food contains, the more calorically dense it is.

As an aside, 1 gram of alcohol contains 7 calories.
