Sorry for the anti-climatic ending. Maybe I should call them up tomorrow and tell them the MS guy secretly told me there was something wrong with SQL. Nah....

Our servers have terrible throughput compared to that :(

The servers i backup that use DDS-2 or DDS-3 autochangers are pretty slow. Only about 1-2MB/sec. The DLT tape drives we use to backup production machines on the other hand average around 10MB/sec. So what he says is about right.
