khtm - if you don't get the point removed from your record by driving school or court, then yes, your rates go up. At least they do here in California. Insurance sux0rs here. 🙂
HydroStream6 - if you do decide to go to court, try the following if you want to be combative:
Gittyup is right on the money -Have them supply the following to validate your ticket:
1. Calibration records of said radar gun (must be calibrated EVERY 24 hours)
2. Calibration record of street (all streets must be calibrated to radar every 5 years)
3. Training verification for officer
4. If officer paced you, have them supply a speedometer calibration record.
5. Verify that there were no cars within 100 feet of you at the time
Also check your state's laws/statutes on radar gun use - in CA, unless certain provisions are made radar / laser cannot be used on streets wider than 40 feet (>2 lanes)
