I'm dead! Please HELP!!!

OK... I just got a ticket for 77 in a 55. It's my first ticket, first time I've been stopped even. It was on a highway here in NYS. I am 17... been driving for a lil over a year. My dad is going to kill me when he finds out! What the hell do I do?

And should I just submit it or go to court to try to get it lowered or what? Anyone have an idea how much this might cost?

Please help, I'm soooo screwed.

It was a state trooper BTW.

Sorry to hear man. As I say with friends, damn it sucks.

Really though, if you were speeding and got a ticket, I say you deserve it. I'm 18 so I know that sometimes you just go fast, but you got caught and 77 in a 55 is a pretty big gap. Was it on a highway or a road? If it was a highway where people regularly go 70+ then I say the damn cop was having a bad day or you don't know when to speed. Stay to the head or middle of a pack of speeding cars. The cop will pull over a car towards the end of the pack since he's easier to get to.

In many states 20MPH over is also considered reckless driving and you have no option but going to court. Also, in many states, if you are under 18, a parent must accompany you and you have no option to just pay it. Don't know about NY, tho.

The officer said I just have to mail the ticket in after I fill it out... but there's two parts to fill out... one saying I'm guilty and accept it, and one saying I want to take it to court.

I would definitely not recommend hiding it. Your dad will probably find out sooner or later when the insurance rates hike up. Just bite the bullet and stop driving like an idiot.

Will one ticket make insurance go up? I don't even usually go over 60, I just wanted to get home today. My dad is going to kill me.

<< I'm on his insurance but I pay for it. If HIS insurance goes up bc of this then I'm f*'ed for sure... >>

I'm on one of those insurance plans too. Triple A. My brother and mom are on it too, but then I've never gotten a ticket or anything. Just two parking tickets here at Davis and I think insurance only cares about moving violations.

You pay for it, so do the bills come to you and you send off a check? Or, do you give him the money and he pays for the whole insurance plan?

At the very least go to court and contest it. When I got a 78 in a 65 I went and got it lowered to 74 over (dropped it below the 10-over magic point system). Also in NC you can go to traffic court and the ticket doesn't count against you as long as you don't get another one in the next two years.

Not that I have ever tried this, but I heard it on the radio this morning. I assume you were clocked with a radar gun?

Try to fight the ticket. Setup a court date. Go to the courthouse and make a motion for discovery, I think that's the term. Request a bunch of documents. Like calibration records of radar gun, officer training records for using the radar gun, documents that say they an even use a radar gun in that city, etc, etc, etc. Now, if any of the documents are not present during the case, it will be dismissed.

It's all a gamble. Maybe just pay the ticket and learn your lesson.

I'd plead no contest and talk to the judge. Ask to take defensive driving.

If that works, you can take defensive driving and NOT have the ticket go on your record. No insurance increase. Just one boring ass day in a class with other offenders 😀

I believe 30 is more common.

Oregon statutes regarding speed:

811.109 Penalties for speed limit violations.
(1) Violation of a specific speed limit imposed under law or of a posted speed limit is punishable as follows:
(a) One to 10 miles per hour in excess of the speed limit is a Class D traffic violation.
(b) 11 to 20 miles per hour in excess of the speed limit is a Class C traffic violation.
(c) 21 to 30 miles per hour in excess of the speed limit is a Class B traffic violation.
(d) Over 30 miles per hour in excess of the speed limit is a Class A traffic violation.
(2) Notwithstanding subsection (1) of this section, if the speed limit is 65 miles per hour and:
(a) The person is exceeding 65 miles per hour but not exceeding 75 miles per hour, the offense is a Class C traffic violation.
(b) The person is exceeding 75 miles per hour but not exceeding 85 miles per hour, the offense is a Class B traffic violation.
(c) The person is exceeding 85 miles per hour, the offense is a Class A traffic violation. [1995 c.383 s.14]

1) Look up your state statutes, your ticket should say specifically what you violated. Know what you're dealing with.
2) Plead guilty & take defensive driving. If it's not available, fight it.
3) If you can afford it, get a lawyer
4) If you're on your dad's insurance, he WILL find out about it. If nothing else he'll find out when he renews his insurance. If you get your own before then you could potentially hide it from him, but you'll be paying significantly more for coverage.
5) Because of your age you could be in deep doodoo, 22 over isn't good.

I know how you feel, though, I got a 72 in a 55 when I was on my parents insurance. They found out about it, but I got my own policy before it affected them. You should look into doing the same, the peace of mind is wonderful. If I get a ticket it's my own damn fault & there's not a lot they can say. My car, my insurance, my record. They're kept completely out of the loop.

Well, I'm sure you've heard it before...

but yes, tell your parents. fess up. be responsible for your actions. you'll be VERY glad you did later on. Trust me on this one... 😱

What the hell? Since when does your insurance go up if you get a ticket?

How much was the ticket? What? That's nothing. <holds up $430 ticket>

I don't get it. My tickets never show up on my insurance, and it never increases. Is this some American thing?

In highschool I got a speeding ticket driving a friend's car. I wasn't *really* supposed to borrow his car, so I paid it and didn't tell him. He never found out about it.

Down here in FL, if you take a class, your insurance (and points on your licence) are unaffected....

I know going above 20mph is usually a fine over $300. Take a defensive driving lesson, maybe that mite help out. Also your insurance rates do go up after a speeding ticket. Its based on a weird point system I think.

They review your DMV record when you apply for or renew insurance policies. Your rate goes up accordingly.

Viper GTS <-- $2000 a year for liability only on a 1989 Accord due to one wreck, one speeding ticket

Viper, I think your rate is that excessive primarily because of the wreck, and not the speeding ticket. Like I said before, my rates have never gone up with the tickets I've received.
