Organ meats ftmfw. I used to eat liver all the time growing up as the German side of my family were pretty enthusiastic about it. I'm also a fan of other organ meats, especially in delicious sweetbreads. Toss it on some risotto with a little truffle oil and it's pure insanity.

Veal sweetbreads are delicious. I'm not huge on liver. I think cow's liver gets fairly gross, but calves liver quickly seared and not overcooked is acceptable. Neither the flavor nor texture is enough to bother me, but the combination of the two is sometimes just a bit too much. But as long as it's not overcooked, and preferably soaked in milk prior to cooking, I can eat it and even enjoy it to an extent.

The above expressly excludes foie gras. That is some delicious, delicious liver.

It's something I eat a couple of times a year, but I'm afraid to order it in restaurants because of the "never order uncommon things when you go out to eat or you'll get food poisoning" rule.

My wife, bless her heart, thinks it looks and smells great everytime I order it, then she tastes it, spits it out, and says "IT TASTES LIKE SUCKING ON A PENNY!"

Bon Appetit
Liver and onions is not unusual, just unpleasant.

organ meats FTL.

Something I've liked since I was 5 and my mom fried chicken livers. I also like lima beans and broccoli.

Liver and onions is great! Everyone loved to complain when I put it on the local University rotating menu. But you know what, when it was liver and onion day (about once every 6 weeks) we sold out!

never been a fan of eating another organism's poison filter...

Kidneys are the poison filters.

Livers are the chemical converters - some bad stuff, lots of good stuff. It doesn't store the bad stuff.

Some of the more well-known functions include the following:

*snip*

* conversion of poisonous ammonia to urea (urea is an end product of protein metabolism and is excreted in the urine)

* clearing the blood of drugs and other poisonous substances

I enjoy turkey gizzard and heart when they come with the bird.

Salmon skin is fan-freaking-tastic.

Gizzard is awesome.

When I was a kid I hated Liver, but it actually tastes good to me these days. I don't go out of my way to have it though.

Craving onions could mean that
  • Your fighting an infection
  • Have high LDL cholesterol
  • Liver enzymes are high
  • Low on Manganese
Try eating liver an onion and see how you feel, always pay attention to your cravings meaning.

Wow, suddenly I'm craving a Spam sandwich. Spam is still good after 9 1/2 years, right?

Liver is ridiculously cheap. I dont know in NYC but in Paisley, Scotland it's like £2.50 for a kilo. We feed the dog with that.

I ... used to hate liver, but apparently it's healthy for kids. Tons of iron or summin'.

It's not easy to cook, as it tends to toughen up or stay raw, with the only reasonable solution is to cook it so long that it becomes soft again.

As for the recipe, it couldn't be easier. Slice a bunch of red onion, sautee it for half an hour, add liver in strips, cook another 40min. Add red wine and reduce.

I still wouldn't pick liver over, uh idk, tripe, or oxtail, but once every 10 years it's nice to reminisce over what you hated as a kid.

I love liver and onions. I always flour the liver first before sautéing it in butter. Don't skimp on the caramelized onions and don't overcook the liver.

I never _truly_ appreciated the sacrifices my Dad made until I became an adult and remembered the lunches he used to carry every day to work (to the same job for 41 years). Bologna sandwiches. Canned corned beef sandwiches. On white bread with a little mustard. And an apple and a pack of chewing gum. 41 years.

Chicken livers floured before cooking along with some caramelized onions is a rocking good time. Got that from my old school immigrant parents. It's been awhile, so I'm putting them on my current shopping list

canned corned beef mixed with diced potatoes and fried up good is a great breakfast with toast and OJ.

🙂

It's happened to me, it's been years, though. Could be you have a dietary deficiency that explains this. Iron?

It's super easy to make, of course. You could include fava beans. Getting the liver, well, it's in the stores. Murder is still illegal.
